After scoring heavy style points with a wonderful hand-drawn art style the question is asked. Does Karaclan's visual novel and turn-based RPG hybrid VED have enough story and combat kudos to stand highly among other indie titles?
VED deserves credit for its gorgeous graphics, workable combat, and underlying lore, but there are significant caveats. Although it proposes to take you on a journey between two worlds and at every point in between, the game makes staying on any path difficult, and trying to find the links between them takes more work than it should. You can find a dozen or so hours of playtime with VED, and many more to explore every possible route or action of consequence. VED is a turn-based adventure game with sword fights and fantasy. As you probably expect, there is a gaggle of game gadgets to collect, upgrade, and use in interesting ways to beat the baddies and win the day. However...Read More
VED is an interesting, though flawed story-driven RPG, it's a little on the short side and the voice-acting isn't the best, but it plays great on the Steam Deck.
VED is a game split right down the middle in almost every way. Awkward, often confusing dialogue that interferes with the story’s clarity, as well as a lack of cohesion between the two game worlds makes up the weaker half. In contrast, VED has an inventive and challenging turn-based combat system, rich world design, and excellent art direction. Unfortunately, a game is the sum of it’s parts, no matter how they are sliced.
VED puts players in the shoes of a young hero named Cyrus who discovers he has powerful magical abilities. Because of this, he is quickly embroiled in a wild story that sees him master his abilities, take on all sorts of powerful foes, and hopefully save the world. All of that leads to a game that has some thrilling combat encounters and a couple of unique mechanics, but the actual story and writing feel mostly lackluster, which ultimately makes for a rather forgettable experience.
