The biggest disservice you can do to What The Golf? is to simply assume it’s some kind of arcade golf game. Not even close. It’s one of the most creative, hilarious and unique games you’ll find. A mix of puzzle solving, arcade fun and downright zany concepts, it’s pure entertainment at its finest. What The Golf? is exactly the kind of joyful experience we all need in our lives right now.

What The Golf? was a highlight of Apple Arcade's launch lineup but it feels right at home on Switch. It's a joyous mix of simple gameplay, hilarious situations and ingenious design, made even better by the inclusion of the riotous Party Mode.

It's not golf, and it's all the better for it. A fun 7-8 hours that will entertain, much like a golf-themed WarioWare.

I’m going to be honest: What the Golf? is not a very good golf game. But that’s okay because it’s not really a golf game at all. Instead, it takes the concept of golf and subverts your expectations of what that should be. Though it borders on being too simplistic at times, What the Golf? is one of the silliest and most entertaining games I’ve played all year.

If you can make use of the one-month free trial for Apple Arcade, this game should be a no-brainer. It’s among the most fun I’ve had on my phone in ages. If you’re considering the pricier console or PC version of What the Golf?, well, just go with your gut. If this looks amusing to you, it probably will be.

What The Golf has created an absurd, hilarious, bite-sized experience that is always golf-adjacent and brilliant for it. The jokes and levels are a whirlwind of zany ideas, but the quick pacing and brief runtime of the game keep them from falling flat or getting tiresome. Despite an overworld that can feel a little repetitive, What The Golf? is full of hearty laughs and addictive gameplay that made me never want to stop playing.

What The Golf? is pitched as a golf game for people who hate golf, and as someone who fits right into this target audience, I was really excited to try it out. Then again, I was also a bit concerned, as I felt like this was just going to be a short gimmick that wouldn’t have anything exciting to offer. Oh boy, I was wrong.

What’s probably the coolest feature the game has however is the “Show a Friend” mode. Here, the game skips the filler and throws you into a quick mashup of various levels from the entire campaign as a sort of “demo mode” to show any friends who may come over. It’s a great way of showcasing the game that helps advertise exactly what sort of game it is, that just lets you throw a controller in a friend’s hands and let them go at it.
