It's a real shame that The Oath in Felghana just isn't the kind of game Falcom makes anymore, but the fact it's gotten a modern re-release at least gives me hope that Memoire releases of Ys I & II, The Ark of Napishtim, and SEVEN are right around the corner. Ys doesn't have the same magic it used to anymore, but as long as the older games remain accessible on modern consoles, we'll always be able to go back to the classics. Whether you're a JRPG fantatic looking for something new to play, an ...

A classic Action RPG that looks and sounds better than ever, Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana may not be for everyone, but those looking for something simpler will undoubtedly love this one.

Despite being one of the longest-running JRPG series still active today, Falcom's Ys series started seeing some measure of success only recently, but this wasn't caused by an increase in the quality of newer entries in the series over the older ones, as Adol's adventures have always been extremely fun to play through and generally well-received by the dedicated fan base, with only a few exceptions. One of these exceptions is the third entry in the series, Wanderers from Ys, a game that wasn't as well received as the first two entries in the series due to the fact that it did away with the fast-paced top-down experience, replacing it with a side-scrolling experience similar to Zelda II which left something to be desired. As such, no one was surprised to see the original eventually getting completely remade with Ys: The Oath in Felghana, a well-realized remake that surpassed not only the original but almost every other entry in the series. Twenty years after the remake's original release, Western audiences on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch can now enjoy an enhanced version of the game with Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, which stands out as the definitive edition of the classic action role-playing game by Falcom.

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is a remaster of the third game in the iconic Ys series. These action-JRPGs have been wowing gamers with slick combat and gorgeous music since 1987. The good news is that this title is still a joy to play and a great entry point. The bad news is that it’s incredible difficult and, updated portraits aside, pretty ugly.

One of Falcom's best Ys games comes to modern consoles, but the end result should've been better.

Originally conceived as a reimagining of the 16-bit console classic Ys III: Wanderers From Ys, this fan-favorite entry returns, newly remastered as Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana. Nearly 15 years after its previous release, longtime fans can look forward to numerous improvements and upgrades, including an all-new voiceover for legendary protagonist, Adol Christin. With remastered high-definition visuals and music, the epic adventure has never looked or sounded better. Nintendo Switch version reviewed. Review copy provided by XSEED for testing purposes.

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana may show its age with its mechanics, but still holds up surprisingly well. It lacks many of the standard features of modern Ys games, such as multiple playable characters, minigame battles and homebase building, but still provides the same story-driven adventure with fast-paced action combat. It's a relatively short adventure that can be completed in around ten or twelve hours, but none of that time is wasted with unnecessary filler. Between the charming visuals, enjoyable gameplay and amazingly-reworked soundtrack, Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is a great action RPG that should be experienced by all fans of the genre and a must-play for fans of Ys.

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, originally released in 2005 (under Ys: The Oath in Felghana), is a remake of the franchise’s third entry Ys III: Wanderers from Ys from way back in 1989. Featuring the early workings of real-time Action RPG combat (a genre traditionally turn-based in the ’80s) that made strides at the time, this port is a welcome venture for newcomers like me who want to experience a bit of history. What it is not, however, is an all-that valuable port for people over-fa...

Unfortunately, there’s not much for me to add. I consider The Oath in Felghana one of the best, if not the best, Ys games in the line-up. Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is that game. I think it’s a little disappointing there aren’t more extras added in, I’d love some background on the game development or just someone talking about the game’s history. It runs very well and I ran into no bugs or crashes whatsoever on my playthroughs. This is the definitive version of The Oath in Felghana.

While I’m a little less over the moon about this game in 2025, I’m still very happy that Oath in Felghana is out on a modern console in the west. From the era of its release, it’s one of the best action RPGs of its style and even to this day, it’s still a very enjoyable one. I might recommend some of the later Ys games ahead of this one, especially if you want a more true 3D adventure, but if your goal is to check out the highs of the storied Ys series, Oath in Felghana is a must-play.

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana might not light the world on fire in a modern landscape, but still stands as a formiddable remaster of a classic action-RPG that would have otherwise been lost to the sands of time. This entry cuts a lot of the complexities that have become synonymous with the genre and offers an easily understood romp that is a great palette cleanser after a glut of dense RPGs in the last year. While I found this to be a bit too simple in the long run, others may find this to be a compelling return to one of Ys' lesser recognised shores.

A remaster of a reimagining, Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana offers a classic Ys experience with enhanced visuals and more. As much as it is improved, however, it feels very basic by today's standards, and some may find issue with its prickly difficulty spikes.

I know from all of this it sounds like I don’t care much for Ys: The Oath in Felghana, but that’s not really the case. It firmly exists within the Ys series, and just as last year brought us that magnificent remake of Dragon Quest III, here’s an old-timey classic within the action JRPG genre for the people who appreciate it. Not everything needs to be deep and meaningful, and Felghana certainly isn’t that. But it’s easy to appreciate its place within one of the longest-running and most enduring JRPG properties of all time.

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is a great action RPG that doesn't overstay its welcome with its story and content, but offers enough replay value for fans. The game's main flaws involve the lack of side content and character development due to the short story, but the fun combat, intriguing setting, and variety of features makes it a worthy Ys title nonetheless.
