Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner – Mars may have flown under the radar in 2003 but it now has the chance to shine again 15 years later. Just know that the budget price reflects the fact that not a whole lot has been added: so if you didn’t like it then you won’t suddenly be smitten.
Originally hailed as one of the greatest mecha combat games on the PlayStation 2, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner was one of the first games I rushed out to buy a console for after playing it with friends. Back in the day, no other game had come close to matching the speed and thrill of piloting a giant robot and facing off against multiple foes at once (save for Omega Boost on the PS1). Then, for many years, it was left to linger in SD on the PS2 before an HD collection of both the first and second Zone of the Enders titles came to be released on both the PS3 and Xbox 360, including in a d...
It's been 15 years since we last saw Dingo piloting his mech on the PS2 classic. Can PSVR prop up this cult favorite? Find out in our Zone of the Enders The 2nd Runner Mars review now!
Konami's classic short-lived mech-based action series has already been given an HD remake so let's see how it holds up in virtual reality.
Another great re-release of a fantastic title that is unfortunately held back by the newly added VR mode. As good as the game is, however the package would have been stronger with the addition of the first game,
The most shocking thing about MARS is how good it looks. For what was originally a PS2 game, MARS looks incredibly sharp. This could be because of the game’s slick style and the somewhat gratuitous use of motion-blur, but either way it still looks incredibly nice. I’ve always loved the designs of the game’s various Orbital Frames, as the sleek and animalistic features of each mech strike the perfect balance of the grandiose of Egyptian mythology and the clean aesthetic of a modern Gundam series.
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner --- M∀RS is one of the best looking mech games out there, despite being a remaster of a 15-year-old game. Its fast, flashy combat still looks and feels good, but is constantly undermined by an extremely unwieldy camera. With its short, linear campaign, dull story, and terrible dialogue, The 2nd Runner seems stuck in 2003, despite its slick graphical upgrade.
To Konami’s credit, however, I’ve heard on the Steam forums that there may be improvements in the works. If the keyboard control issues are addressed, I will update this review accordingly, as this was very nearly a deal-breaker for me. A number of other issues, particularly audio system related bugs, have been raised by a number of Steam users as well. While I didn’t experience such problems, it is fair to note that Konami has commented on those issues on the Steam forums and is workin...
Make no mistake about it, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner MARS is a game that will only really be appreciated by fans of the series. Even with its VR mode, there’s nothing here that newcomers will find particularly impressive. Time hasn’t been kind to the gameplay of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner, and without any work being put in to remedy its now dated mechanics, this remaster feels pointless and defunct.
One of Hideo Kojima’s most beloved series is back with the remaster of the second Zone of the Enders game, titled Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner. Originally released in 2003 for the PS2, The 2nd Runner was praised for its fast combat and improvements to the abilities the main character could use, compared to the first game. The remaster, Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner M∀RS modernizes this PS2 classic with 4K visuals, VR support, and updates to the sound. Saying, “Zone of the Enders is back and better than ever,” might be true, but considering this is still a PS2 game which hasn’t aged ...
Hideo Kojima has been accused at various points of promoting style over substance, and in this remaster of Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner that’s more apparent than ever. For all of its fantastically designed mech, and its tight and often enjoyable combat, Zone of the Enders 2nd Runner is an ugly, poorly-told and overly short slice of nostalgia that can’t be saved by the introduction of VR.
