Professional reviews from gaming critics
One More Level takes a hearty stab at a new franchise. Come see how it fared in our official Valor Mortis PS5 Review!
A first-person Soulslike game featuring a French soldier from the Napoleonic era sounds intriguing. That is precisely how Valor Mortis—the new title from One More Level, the studio best known for the Ghostrunner series—is presented
Soulslike from the harsh Napoleonic era brings challenging battles, diverse locations, and even parkour.
A contrarian might say that Krakow-based studio One More Level was taking a leap of faith by trying to create a Souls-like with an FPP perspective... and yet their courage paid off.
With a genre as saturated as the soulslike action RPG, Valor Mortis feels like a breath of fresh air. While its conclusion isn't as strong as I would have preferred, One More Level's brand of first-person parkour and swordfighting is as captivating here as it was in the Ghostrunner series, and those looking for a soulslike with a new perspective will likely enjoy their time with Valor Mortis.
The Ghostrunner devs blend first person action with a Soulslike form and twisted Napoleonic setting in Valor Mortis.
Valor Mortis is a largely successful blend of the soulslike genre and first-person action. The story becomes the player's main drive, featuring an intriguing, mysterious plot set in an uncharted time period. Its linear world design goes well with the Metroidvania exploration and gameplay mechanics, as it never feels stale on a first run. A simple skill tree and weapons/Transmutations upgrade path diminish any replay value, something that buyers should know before acquiring it.
The Napoleonic Wars are the backdrop for a new fast action Soulslike from the makers of Ghostrunner, that sees 19th century Europe overrun by zombies.
