Loop Hero Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Regardless of whether or not you enjoy the sound of a “top-down rogue-like deck & dungeon-building auto-battler”, Loop Hero will graciously guide you along its path - only to ensnare you in its devilishly addictive short gameplay loops.
In order to reach the ending of Loop Hero, you will have to roll through dozens upon dozens of loops, but the way new concepts layer over the basics keeps it fun as you strategize to plan out your challenging loop that will earn you the best loot while ensuring your survival. With new elements dropping in consistently as you grow your village, it rarely stays staid for long. Some of the finer points might require some dumb luck or an assist from a guide, but if you’re ready to just poke at a rock solid concept until it cracks and bends to your will, Loop Hero is amazing.
I’ve spent the last ten minutes typing and deleting paragraphs that try to explain the concept of Loop Hero without sounding like a gibbering
It's extremely compelling and dangerously addictive; you start an expedition, you fight, gain resources, go back to camp, reset. Then you do it again. It's hypnotic. After a while, it feels like nothing else exists outside of the loop, and you're content to stay in it.
Downsides include the frustrations of randomized loot, an occasional grind to getting enough materials for the next camp upgrade, and the fact that by the time the fourth and final chapter rolls around there are few more secrets and combos to discover. Still, the game is a genuine gem, and for $15 at full price, it's worth getting hooked on.
Don't come into Loop Hero with expectations simply because you've never really played anything like this before. Whatever those expectations might be, they're probably wrong. But do come into Loop Hero as it embodies so much of what makes games great: storytelling, engaging interactions with a digital world, the rewards of looting, world building, strategy, but most of all that ceaseless desire to just dip in for one more run.
I will 100% admit when I initially started playing Loop Hero, my first thought was, “how much fun can I get out of an RPG I can’t truly control?“ Loop Her
Loop Hero combines familiar mechanics in unfamiliar ways, producing an exhilarating and tactical roguelite that you'll struggle to put down.
Like the game’s constantly evolving runs, Loop Hero itself is ever-changing. Its developers are already responding to fan feedback and planning on rolling out some much-needed quality of life changes, like the ability to save. While the current version could use some tweaking, there’s no doubt that it’s only going to improve from here.
Loop Hero is exactly the sort of game that its publisher, Devolver Digital, has developed an eye for. It’s addictive, genre-spanning gameplay on top of a nebulous story that is open to interpretation. Side characters are sometimes too dismissive of what’s going on in the world and players will probably dip in and out of runs with so much fervor and anticipation that they won’t stop to examine the overall metatext. Loop Hero pokes fun at the grind players pursue to satisfy a game’s core loop. Rarely do we question why we do the tasks a game asks of us, but Loop Hero puts those questions front a...
Don’t let Loop Hero‘s simple appearance fool you; a dense and addictive game, unlike anything else you’ve played, lurks under its retro veneer, waiting to get its claws into you. And once you’ve fallen into the loop, it’ll be hard to get back out again. Building up your character and creating the world around him is gloriously rewarding, and not even death is going to stand in your way.
A commentary on games and players and a compulsive grind to boot.
