Amnesia: Memories Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Amnesia was released on the PSP back in 2011. It was ported over as Amnesia: Memories to the PlayStation Vita and Steam in 2015. Those in the Otome game space should have knowledge of it since it has a cult classic reputation. Idea Factory announced that it will be ported…
Even after completion, Amnesia still feels like your standard visual novel with dating elements championed at the forefront. I don’t mean this as a criticism, because there’s not much worth changing in the core visual novel elements, but what Idea Factory has added to this is enough to draw new fans in, and satisfy old ones too. This was the perfect game for a sceptic of dating games, like myself, to play – not only has it shown me the possibilities of the genre, but also reminded me never to judge a visual novel by its digital cover. Amnesia: Memories shows off its 5 unique stories, and although it's not perfect, it still succeeds as a visual novel.
I can see why Amnesia: Memories ended up as a breakout hit for the developer, even if I had to bite my tongue for most of an evening working my way through a route. It contained a lot more of the little quality of life items I took for granted in their later works, and if you’re curious about romance games, this is a fine starting point.
Amnesia offers a solid narrative which you don’t need to be an otome-game fan to appreciate. There are issues with the way the story is told which might raise some eyebrows, and the plot is certainly melodramatic at times, but the art and music really carry the player along towards the memorable ending.
This visual novel tells a good story, but a big flaw ruins a lot of the experience.
