Professional reviews from gaming critics
Silent Hill: Townfall earns its place in this revival era through atmosphere, sound, and story, carrying that strength all the way to the credits.
So if we consider that the last couple of years has given us an informal Silent Hill “trilogy” with the remake of 2, Silent Hill f, and now Silent Hill: Townfall, it’s fair to say that in some ways Townfall is the most limited of the three. But you could argue that in other, important ways it’s the most well-produced and experimental, too. A few times in the past, Konami has tapped Western developers to build on the Silent Hill franchise with a new entry (as opposed to a remake or re-envisioning). Silent Hill: Townfall understands that less is more. It is a smart, riveting tale about the people of St. Amelia, and while Simon is how we experience this story, Townfall is more about the heart that lies in rural communities than it is about him. Drenched in unsettling imagery, confronting themes, and parallels to real-life events, this game is a sight to behold. Review: With its gripping story and brain-teasing puzzles, Silent Hill: Townfall is another brilliant entry in the survival horror series.

It’s one of those games you need to play in complete darkness, with only the glow of the TV or handheld as your light source. It creates perfect immersion as players venture toward St. Amelia that'll feel like a sublime nightmare.

Silent Hill: Townfall continues to prove that taking Konami’s long dormant horror franchise on a world tour was the right choice, as Screen Burn has crafted an excellent narrative that gets the most out of its setting through weaving unique cultural trauma with the series’ distinct exploration of grief, backed by some stellar performances and visuals. Though the gameplay also has some great moments of its own, particularly in its puzzles, combat often stumbles into a mess of frustration and tedium, leaving the experience feeling admirable but uneven.
One of the more constant human emotions is regret, although usually we feel it at around 2 AM, when we...
