Eriksholm: The Stolen Dream wants to spin a grand Dickensian tale centered on the familial bond of a street urchin and her brother, but this ambition is betrayed by its lack of emotional stakes. And while its stealth puzzles can be intriguing and challenging at times, thanks to the ability to swap among multiple characters, these largely fail to deviate from the genre's long-held conventions.

Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector tells a radical science fiction tale through an impeccably designed system and a moving narrative rife with themes that are acutely attuned to our times. This is bolstered by a crew of companions who are not only well-fleshed out but offer genuine support during crises - a predicament you’ll find yourself in frequently. The soothing atmospheric soundtrack doesn’t hurt, either.

I’d admit that I’ve spent at least eight hours pressing on these buttons and dragging resources from frame to frame. I’ve watched with some satisfaction when the crew manages to survive yet another calamitous event: a friendly exchange with aliens gone awry depicted via text events, the ship veering too close to a black hole, or the crew simply weathering through a debilitating illness. But these are merely a series of pleasing routines: press enough buttons, and your fuel/oxygen/hull/morale meter will inevitably see a temporary spike and offer that short burst of dopamine. It’s hardly the stuff of imagination, curiosity and grandiose that power space epics. As it stands, Oceans of Time has now done the unthinkable: it made space travel unexciting and stodgy. Hadfield would be perturbed, I think, in my dour expression throughout it all.

It’s time to go back to the 90s.

Littlewood
7.0

Even though Littlewood is a peaceful town building and farming sim that doesn’t offer anything new in the genre, it thrives in the soothing, meditative loop of its routines--from harvesting fruits to mining precious stones from ores. There are plenty to busy yourself with, but there’s also plenty of time to get to them at your own pace. This means that Littlewood is mostly devoid of the pressures to optimise the grind--an issue that usually plagues other farm sims like Stardew Valley. It’s, in short, a charming little distraction from the stresses of our real world.

Star Renegades
7.0

Star Renegades doesn’t countenance mistakes, while demanding an inordinate amount of commitment from its players due to its mechanically dense system. This can be a challenging game to get into, from learning about its intricate turn-based combat, to making sense of the walls of text, numbers and symbols it throws at you. Those patient enough to familiarise themselves with what this roguelike has to offer, however, may find this to be a tactically satisfying experience.

Even without the original’s VR elements, Chronos: Before the Ashes’ compelling and somewhat challenging combat is still its main draw, in which you have to attack, dodge and parry your way, with refined precision, towards victory. Its aging system also adds an interesting twist to combat, imbuing your battles with a sense of prudence. That said, it doesn’t offer anything new to the genre. Just watch out for its clumsy camera angles and you’ll do fine.
