Dynasty Warriors: Origins

But while I enjoyed my time with the game’s combat, I couldn’t help but find myself becoming more bored as the game progressed. The combat was still fun, don’t get me wrong, but the story’s presentation was dry in a way that felt like you were watching a movie your old history teacher put on in high school. There’s nothing technically wrong with it, but for a series that is meant to be a bit silly and melodramatic, the more grounded presentation puts a damper on Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Purely a game, it’s a good time. As a Dynasty Warriors entry, I can’t help but feel that earlier games were better.

After I finished the game after 12 hours, I couldn’t help but think that I deluded myself into thinking that Slitterhead was better than it was. I wanted to like it, I honestly did, but after a certain point, goodwill can only take you so far. Eventually, you just have to accept a game you were looking forward to is actually bad.

But again, most of the criticisms I have don’t do much to change the fact that this is a stellar remaster of an already great game. While the original version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door still has a special place in my heart, I can’t dispute that this Switch remaster is the definitive version of the game. All of the charm that made players fall in love with it back in 2004 is still here and the gameplay is still as simple yet brilliant as it was back then. There’s a steady difficulty curb and while the few new additions to this game are quality-of-life changes, not fundamentally altering what was there originally was probably for the best. In a year where major game releases for the console are few and far between, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is, unsurprisingly, going to be one of the best games on the Switch this year.
