Come for the wonderful presentation, stay for the baddie boppin'. Crossing Souls nails its 1980s aesthetic, no question there — the 'long-lost-cartoon' game is strong here, right down to the artfully placed VHS artifacts in the animated cutscenes playing out across a sweeping adolescent adventure. Nostalgia aside, the story and beat-em-up gameplay please and surprise in a few key ways, but come with a few too many paper cuts to prevent Crossing Souls from breaking through to that next level.

With the new James Bond film Skyfall out next month, you might expect this year's 007 game to be all about the present — instead, Eurocom digs into the franchise's rich legacy, updating some of Bond's more memorable moments for the modern era. With the successful reimagining of GoldenEye, Eurocom proved that they know their way around a Bond movie or two. But can they manage six of them at once in 007 Legends?

It's generally a bad idea to judge anything by its title or cover, but one look at either pretty much spells out what to expect from Grasshopper Manufacture's latest fever dream, Lollipop Chainsaw: comic books, pop music, rainbows, titillating exploitation and lots and lots of violence. These are all the makings for perfect video game pulp, and in many ways Suda51's vision of chainsaw-wielding cheerleader zombie hunter Juliet Starling slicing through the undead community with help from her boyfriend Nick's magical decapitated head absolutely nails it, if not mechanically then at least with regards to presentation.

Max Payne is a man who can't catch a break. Haunted by the murders of his wife and baby girl, and the loss of the woman who managed to crack through his rock-solid shell, Max has become a washed-up, broken man with an addiction to alcohol and pain killers, waiting on the day for the planet to stop so he can step off. Left with no other choice, Max takes up an offer from a man named Passos, an ex-cop he can't remember meeting in the police academy, to do private security for a wealthy industrialist family in São Paulo, Brazil.

GoldenEye 007

When GoldenEye 007 works it feels like one of the best shooters on DS, but the combat blemishes are frequent enough to become quite maddening. Still, players able to look past occasional hokey weapon damage and pinpoint enemy accuracy will find a lot to like here, especially if they happen to be a fan of Ian Fleming's most famous creation or are just looking for a handheld shooter not named Call of Duty.
