A true cinematic gaming masterpiece, Max Payne 3 is not just another triumph for Rockstar, but testament to what it can do when it turns its hand to linear storytelling. Max Payne 3 might be a stylistic shift for the series, but it's also a raw and brutal portrait of a man pushed to the edge that deserves a place alongside Rockstar's superlative open-world efforts. Prepare to enter a world of Payne.
A lot has been made of developer’s strides to incorporate the fluidity, control, and weight of an FPS into Max Payne 3’s third-person formula; with Bullet Time at its best, a rock-solid targeting system, and gorgeous physics, it possesses a killer finesse that any top-tier shooter can aspire to. It’s a well-oiled, hardboiled shooter that gamers of all interests (though certainly not all ages) should enjoy.
One of the most memorable third person shooters I ever played was the first Max Payne game for the PC. It had an interesting story, cool presentation and style, and most importantly was a lot of fun to play. Leaping in the air with my dual wielding pistols while shooting bad guys in slo-motion was simply a rush and left me feeling like a Hollywood star. Well it has been 9-years since the previous Max Payne game, so Max Payne 3 arrives with some great anticipation. Unfortunately, the years have not been kind to Max. Rockstar did Remedy well in this reboot, and its a game that is sure to please longtime fans of the franchise, and snag some new ones as well.
Max Payne is a man who can't catch a break. Haunted by the murders of his wife and baby girl, and the loss of the woman who managed to crack through his rock-solid shell, Max has become a washed-up, broken man with an addiction to alcohol and pain killers, waiting on the day for the planet to stop so he can step off. Left with no other choice, Max takes up an offer from a man named Passos, an ex-cop he can't remember meeting in the police academy, to do private security for a wealthy industrialist family in São Paulo, Brazil.
Max Payne 3 is the closest our consoles have come to making us feel like an action hero
The graphics are damn impressive and the attention to detail in all the environments is just mind boggling. Rockstar also had the noise rock band Health to score the game which ended up being another smart move by Rockstar who have a smart taste for music. Rockstar really has a knack for bringing out the best of their voice-actors with James McCaffrey (the voice of Max) pulling in probably his best work here. The sound team should really get acknowledged for their work on the game because the way everything sounds, from the guns to the environment getting shredded during gunfights, is phenomen...
It’s been a long wait, but overall I am definitely satisfied with my time in Max Payne 3. It was addictive and entertaining to play from beginning to end, and after a brief stint on Arcade I realised I could easily play it again and still enjoy it – and the multiplayer’s pretty damn fun too, if sadly lacking in co-op. While I would have preferred an American Noir setting I can’t really fault having something different, and Sao Paulo makes a disturbing new world to explore. The cutscen...
