SOMA is a truly excellent gaming experience, with the only flaws coming from your own personal expectation. If you’re expecting a game as terrifying as Amnesia and without any adventure game-style puzzles to solve you might have some complaints, but SOMA is still scary, dripping with tension and heart-stopping moments, and it’s easier to find the items you need to solve puzzles than in Amnesia. It’s the story and world of SOMA that is the highlight though, with a compelling storyline th...
If you’re an adventure fan and not a terminal coulrophobe Dropsy is well worth picking up, just because it tries to do something different. No dialogue, occasionally terrifying but otherwise heart-tugging story, doable puzzles and a decent-sized open world with day-night cycles, starring a creepy clown and his animal friends. It stutters a bit with execution by throwing you in to the open world too fast with no easy way to get around or changing times easily, and the lack of adventure game ...
For the most part the gameplay of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is great fun. The combat has some camera and character problems but is otherwise enjoyable and nicely strategic, and the action strategy overworld moments are a highlight. I’m not so sure about the exploration, side quests, Chocobo breeding, etc, especially with the tiny areas and many loading screens, but it’s mostly optional stuff barring the loading screens. The trouble is though, the gameplay is not the major part of the game. ...
Those niggles aside, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an absolute triumph and the best open-world RPG around, maybe even the best altogether. The main story stays interesting, the side-stories are better than the main plots from most entire games, the characters and writing are wonderful, and the acting is massively improved from the last two games. Then we start talking about the open world, the graphics, the deep and involving quests, how Geralt’s beard grows over time, Charles Dance, all the ...
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is an incredibly fun standalone expansion to one of the Best games of 2014, and in plenty of places is tougher. Sometimes more frustrating, especially in places with respawning enemies, and the forced stealth section in the beginning is a bit of a misstep, but overall the Wolfenstein gameplay is just as great here. Nevertheless there are issues, most notably the Nazi Zombies finale being underwhelming and the load of technical problems this reviewer encountered (and...
If you plan to play Nazi Zombie Army entirely in single-player, don’t bother. Get Dying Light or Wolfenstein instead. The gameplay gets tedious very fast and most people will be bored in no time at all. Get a few friends together though and the game comes alive (no pun intended, honest), and that’s clearly the way Rebellion intended it to be played. The new campaign furthermore is the best of the three, and while it seems odd to buy the first two games again in actuality it makes things m...
I admit that while a few of those control and AI issues knock the score down I generally really enjoyed Republique. It feels fresh and unique, and the way the plot and lore slowly collects over the course of the first three episodes leaves me pining for the next two. The visuals are pretty damn good and the sound design even better, especially the experienced and highly recognisable voice cast, and most importantly it feels like a PC title rather than an iOS port. If you’re looking for a mo...
Evolve can be a very fun game, but it’s also a very limiting one. Once you get past the initial learning curve matches quickly start blending into one, and that’s not just because the maps feel identical. Even the joy of hunting and thinking tactically gets diluted when you’re actually pulling the same moves every time, to the point where I questioned whether I was playing for fun or just to unlock new s**t. Furthermore a host of matchmaking difficulties, not to mention not being able t...
The biggest problem Grey Goo has is that it’s far too hard for what it is, which is a fun Command and Conquer-style RTS. I’ve played lots of this type of RTS and I’ve rarely encountered one with such a non-existent learning curve - you either know everything immediately or you die. Which is a shame, because everything else on display here is really good fun. The factions are all unique, enjoyable to play, and mostly balanced despite being so radically different, along with all that Trid...
Grim Fandango really is a masterpiece, although it’s not a completely perfect one. The story, world, voice acting, music, script and style are some of the best gaming has to offer, rivalling the best animated movies. The puzzles are 80% superb, best the adventure genre can do, and 20% frustrating as all hell. Nevertheless that’s an absolutely minor thing in the grand scheme of things, and the world and writing are so incredible you’ll let any trial-and-error moments slide. The Remastere...
