Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil 6

September 30, 2012
7.9

Evolution and ambition are only natural for a franchise as old as Resident Evil, as is the need to respect a long-lasting legacy and the fans that have come to appreciate it. But in trying to serve all masters, Resident Evil 6 loses focus and fails to accurately assess which of its elements are truly worthy of being included. When this game is at its height, it sets new standards for the series in every way. Unfortunately, there are no shortage of lows either, taking what could have been an excellent experience and making it something considerably lesser.

Fans of Naruto are no doubt going to pick up Generations, but what's more important is that showing this game to non-Naruto fans will make them understand what makes this franchise so beloved. Hidden below the crazy, numerous battles are some very moving stories about kids trying to find their way in the world - and how their elders struggle to raise and protect them. The heart of the Naruto franchise is stunningly sincere - and somehow this game finds those points and shines a spotlight on them. Powerful stuff indeed, particularly if you just walk into this looking for a casual, addicting fighting game with great graphics - which also describes Generations perfectly.

Resident Evil: Revelations
8.5

Resident Evil Revelations is a great handheld game, one that not only pushes the boundaries and standards of the Nintendo 3DS but one that recaptures a long-forgotten spirit of a classic franchise. Make no mistake about it, this is a full Resident Evil adventure that isn't watered down because it's in portable form. That's no small accomplishment. Despite its disappointments, Revelations will be remembered as one of the better entries in this series, and should serve as a notice to all other developers, including Nintendo itself - this is the type of production value we want to see on the 3DS.

Assassin's Creed Revelations
8.5

That said, Revelations serves its lead characters well and is a very effective bookend. The improvements in graphics and storytelling, combined with already-great voice acting and music, help make this a memorable finale for some of the most interesting video game characters we've seen in this generation. Not even the weak new Den Defense mechanic or Desmond’s insane side mission system can change that fact. And multiplayer will certainly reward those looking for a break from first-person shooting. The gameplay there continues to improve on an already-addicting formula, and learning more about the Templars proves rather fascinating.
