Split Fiction

I expected nothing less than a masterpiece with Split Fiction, and yet my expectations were still exceeded. Play this game immediately.

Pirate Yakuza is never subtle, boring, or less than ostentatiously campy. Everyone should enjoy this perfect pirate adventure from a studio at the top of their game.

Unlovable characters, no decision making, tedious mechanics, novice writing, terrible sound design and the most boring story in years add up to what is looking to be DONTNOD's worst game ever.

Dawnfolk makes for a fun casual city-building experience in a genre usually restricted to hardcore gamers.

We Sonic fans are an interesting, resilient bunch. For decades, we have survived strings of some of the worst AAA games ever made, punctuated occasionally by an okay game. And yet, we persevered! Whenever people on the internet would make fun of us, we would proudly say “30 years of bad games didn’t kill us. You really think YOU can?” Yet here I stand, hand in hand with my best friend Shadow the Hedgehog, 25 years after the franchise sped into the third dimension with Sonic Adventure – and I can confidently say that Shadow Generations is the best 3D Sonic game of all time.

Frostpunk is a stone cold classic, so to speak, among the city-builder community. A near-perfect mix of survival and city building, with management going beyond large overhead components of a town like hunger and water. While I loved this first RTS outing from 11Bit Studios, there was some secret sauce somewhere that was missing. Whatever it was, a hearty helping has been poured into Frostpunk 2, which is easily one of the best city-builder games ever made.

I have long been an advocate of the recent rise of games without combat. There are so many interesting ways to create the push and pull, the challenge, the intense moments that are going to stick with us forever beyond fighting. My favorite game of all time, Death Stranding, is an entire open world action game that does everything in its power to convince you not to fight, and a game which has many surface level similarities to this one. Caravan SandWitch is the latest addition to this much needed subgenre, but unfortunately it fails to replace the idea of combat in this beautiful open world with any interesting gameplay at all.

Tactical Breach Wizards
8/10

If you’re here because you thought the name Tactical Breach Wizards was equal parts funny and confusing and your curiosity got the best of you, then don’t move a muscle – you’ve come to the right place. It’s got tactics, it’s got breaching, it’s got wizards – it does exactly what it says on the tin. Suspicious Developments Studio has configured a simultaneously hilarious and challenging tactical strategy game as the third game in their spiritual “Defenestration Trilogy” that will have you sweating bullets, and then firing those bullets at dark sorcerers wielding machine guns to knock them out of the windows from the top floor of very tall buildings.

I’m just a boy, standing in front of an unseen virtual audience, asking them to play Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. There are hundreds of thousands of video games in the world, and there is nothing out there even a little bit like Capcom’s new action/real-time strategy game. I’m so in love with its innovative, masterfully woven, eye-opening weirdness, and I simply need people to know about it. If you feel AAA games have stagnated in their design, concept, or execution, Capcom has brought down a building-sized hammer on that claim, and that hammer’s name is Kunitsu-Gami.

Animal Well
10/10

I’m not a metroidvania guy. My frustrating and infuriating attempts at Super Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Hollow Knight, arguably the three most notoriously excellent games in the genre, should communicate all you need to know about my feelings on these kinds of games. Behold! Animal Well.
