The Aragami franchise began with the game of the same name that was released in 2016. Five years later, Aragami 2 aims to expand on the supernatural stealth ninja formula introduced by the first game. The standalone game requires no knowledge of its predecessor to enjoy, which is really a good thing bearing in mind it is almost a completely different experience. Unfortunately a lack of challenge, a few bugs, and repetitive missions stop it from being a great thing.

Aragami 2 is a huge departure from the original game. In exchanging the linear narrative-driven stealth experience for an open-ended co-op mission adventure, Lince Works has created a game that feels just as flawed as the original, but has a lot more charm in it's small moments and simplicity. Repetitive missions and enemies make it hard to get engrossed with the game for long periods of time, but as a stealth action game to hop into for quick little bursts, Aragami 2 can be pretty fun.

Aragami 2 is a stylish, aggressive stealth game that's a little too lean at times.

Aragami 2 is a solid third-person stealth game that involves combat and making decisions on the fly. As a shadow spirit protagonist, we wield a number of different abilities as we try to get past guards, defeat enemies, and use a wide variety of tactics to get the job done. It isn’t always easy and sometimes the game can feel frustratingly repetitive, but the smooth sprinting and shadow leaping allows you to zoom past repeated environments relatively quickly. It may not have the most engaging story, but the gameplay is great and the smooth, intuitive controls feel incredibly satisfying.

A sequel that gets things right and wrong, Aragami 2 continues to refine its core gameplay mechanics but loses the soul of what made the first game so striking and refreshing.

With a patch or two, chances are Aragami 2 will turn into a game that’s well worth a stealth fan’s time and money, especially if they like dabbling in multiplayer. Until then though, you might want to think twice before diving in. While it’s initially fun nipping around Aragami 2‘s maps thanks to traversal options such as shadow leap, and later unlockable abilities really empower you, repetition does take its toll on the experience. All the while, frequent bugs and technical issues make you wonder if you’re playing something that was ready to step into the light for all to...

Aragami 2 is so ridiculously easy that you can breathe in its general direction and you’ve exploited some gameplay mechanic. It’s great for those who like speedrunning, or those who might not have a lot of time in their day, but if you’re hoping for the slow and methodical stealth gameplay of Aragami 1 then you won’t find it in the sequel. Just like most developers (eyeing you Ubisoft over Splinter Cell) it seems working gameplay formulas mean bugger all.

Aragami 2 is a third-person stealth action game from Lince Works where you take control of the titular Aragami warrior, a soulless ninja summoned from the shadows, to fulfill your master’s contract. As an Aragami who has recently and mysteriously been freed from their obligations, you’re found by a hidden community of other lost Aragami and quickly tasked with helping to discover your shared origins in the hopes of restoring your humanity.

Aragami 2’s ninja garb is frayed around the edges, but it’s still an easy, breezy fit. Perfect for a quick-fix of stealth, and joyfully light on its feet.

Padded, mediocre, and tripped up by horribly dated AI and unreliable game mechanics, Aragami 2 is the kind of stealth game that you may want to just sneak past.

It doesn’t matter how well you hide, there’s just no escaping the stealth genre these days. In addition to a steady deluge of dedicated stealth games, it seems like every other AAA adventure has the player creeping around at some point. Despite this stealth oversaturation, the indie ninja game Aragami managed to make a bit of a name for itself back in 2016 thanks to its old-school charms and a few clever twists on the standard sneak-and-stab formula.

Arguably one of the original Aragami's greatest strengths, it's nice to see Lince Works broaden the scope of their level design. But while traversing the multi-floor scope of the environments can be curious and rewarding for a time, the drastic alteration to how mission structure and overall progression is handled in Aragami 2 feels like a grave error of judgment. No doubt a consequence of Lince Works' desire to incorporate co-op/online-centric outings for players to engage with, while the intention may be innocent in principle, the needless series of figurative hoops to jump through as well as a disjointed, shallow...
