What happens when you mix together Hinako, Lime, and Yuzu? You get a magical girl fruit salad, of course! Bluuuuuuuuuue~ Bluuuuuuuuuue~~ I am lonesome, lonesome for you.

Blue Reflection has minor issues here and there but it tells its story well with likable characters, well-integrated mechanics, solid combat and a unique magical girl style.

Blue Reflection brings some unique elements to the RPG world and features plenty of great character moments built around a beautiful looking game that is held back a bit by it’s by the books story and easy combat.

Really, that would be enough to give the game a perfectly mediocre score. However, the sheer ineptitude of a text editing job and horrifying handling of what could’ve been beautiful graphics are major dealbreakers, driving this game down into the dirt.

The story gets into some serious topics at times, such as whether it’s acceptable to manipulate people’s emotions in the real world to gain more power for fighting demons, but in general it’s lighthearted and cute in both tone and appearance. The enemy designs are also sufficiently alien and bizarre to stand out from typical JRPG monsters. I particularly liked the designs of the Sephirot, which are generally not lighthearted or cute at all. Their horrifically out-of-place appearances just help cement them as abominations that need to be driven from the world.

Although mostly known for their Atelier series, Gust occasionally tries something new. Blue Reflection is a simple story-driven experience but is it one worth playing?

Blue Reflection feels like a Gust game. That is, it looks and sounds beautiful at times, but ultimately falls flat elsewhere. While certainly easy on the eyes, it cuts every corner it can in what feels like a purposeful attempt to emit mediocrity. There’s some good in here, but the rest feels hastily put together.

Developer Gust is mostly known for the Atelier series, but in recent times, the team tried to expand beyond their most successful series with the creation of new IPs. Nights of Azure, while enjoyable, is kind of hit-and-miss, and the same can be said of the team's next new property, Blue Reflection, despite the new game being somewhat better in certain aspects than the team's 2015 action role-playing game.

Blue Reflection is the latest offering from Gust, the developer who previously brought us the Atelier series. A brand new IP, Blue Reflection focuses on the story of Hinako, a former child ballet star who starts a new high school. She discovers that she's a Reflector, the game’s version of a magical girl, along with her new friends, Yuzu and Lime. As the story unfolds we learn of a parallel world, The Common, where monsters feed off emotions. Hinako and her friends must use the power of friendship to defeat the evil Sephirot and save the world.

Complemented by a strong sense of style in its gorgeous presentation, this is one of the stronger titles in Gust's library.

Blue Reflection tells an accurate story of a high school girl who is coming to terms with becoming a magical girl. The game is graphically one of the best looking games from Gust that I have played and I applaud them for trying something new. There's a lot to see in Blue Reflection if players put the time into the story, but if you're looking level grinding and item collecting, this isn't going to be the game for you.

Blue Reflection is lacking in a few areas, but it still has enough going for it to offer an overall enjoyable experience that fans of the magical girl sub genre will enjoy.
