A metroidvania with beautiful visuals, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus unfortunately just isn't all that exciting to play. It's a hodge-podge of ideas and mechanics, many of which have been done better elsewhere, and its airborne antics often simply lead to frustration.

There’s a quote by T.S. Eliot that almost no one uses: “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal.” That’s because it’s a bit clunky and heavy-handed, and sometimes takes a bit to extrapolate the meaning. Steve Jobs, meanwhile, then took that quote, changed it, and misattributed it to Pablo Picasso: “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” It’s a solid approach: you see someone else’s idea and, instead of trying to copy it, take the whole damn thing and tweak it to make ...

From Squid Shock Studios, Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is a stunning metroidvania with a large platforming focus. Bō displays impressive potential throughout its runtime, combining smooth traversal with unique combat mechanics to such a degree that I can describe it as a true romp. Unfortunately, that potential is never fully realised, leading to a path most haphazard.

Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus looks like a classic side-scrolling Metroidvania, and it is, except that description belies the game’s true focus. Realistically, this is a demanding, at-times brutal platformer with Metroidvania elements, set in a gorgeous world inspired by Japanese watercolour art. Though it features some of the best parts of modern metroidvania games, too often Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is waylaid by its lack of direction and poor platforming.

As long as you don't expect anything genre-defining, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is a breathtaking Metroidvania experience. The art style is gorgeous, the action-platforming is fast and satisfying, and the sweet modesty of its tale is though-provoking and gentle. Path of the Teal Lotus is a little heavy with the tutorials at the beginning, boss battles later on get frustrating, and it doesn't do anything remarkably new, but fans of Hollow Knight will find this a gratifying curio that's well worth diving into, even if the pool here is a little bit shallow.

Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is among the best games I’ve played and easily stands alongside the other greats in this genre. Have you been waiting to play Silksong for years and years? Well you’ll still be waiting, but this game is an absolute must play. And at a reported cost of only 20 USD, I recommend Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus to anyone and everyone even tangibly interested in metroidvanias. Move aside little Knight, it’s the Lotus’s turn in the spotlight.

Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is an extremely charming metroidvania thanks to its rich use of Japanese folklore in its world and character design. Not only is the world nice to look at, but a delight to explore. There are some rough edges when it comes to the platforming, but there is immense fun to be had if you can work past them.
