Ara: History Untold

Ara: History Untold

September 22, 2024
7.8

There’s a lot to like about Ara: History Untold, even with the rough edges that appear every so often. Barring some performance issues, I’d say anyone even a little curious about the genre should give the game a shot and try it for themselves (especially if you have Xbox Game Pass). As for those of you with hundreds of hours in 4X games? Well, Civilization VII is still months away and Ara is a worthwhile competitor in the space and so I highly recommend playing at least a few games during this wait. Who knows, maybe you’ll find yourself with a new favourite in the genre…

King of Meat

Unscored

I really enjoyed my time with the game and I could absolutely see myself playing King of Meat regularly with a group of friends when it eventually releases on the Xbox Series, PS5, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. While there are some uncertainties still regarding future monetization, with 100+ Glowmade created levels at launch and a robust set of tools for players to make their own, King of Meat is shaping up to be a “must watch” game as it gets closer to release.

Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is among the best games I’ve played and easily stands alongside the other greats in this genre. Have you been waiting to play Silksong for years and years? Well you’ll still be waiting, but this game is an absolute must play. And at a reported cost of only 20 USD, I recommend Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus to anyone and everyone even tangibly interested in metroidvanias. Move aside little Knight, it’s the Lotus’s turn in the spotlight.

Immortals of Aveum
8.8

Yet even with those expectations coming in, Immortals of Aveum exceeded them. I started the game expecting a fun, 12-15 hour experience, but ultimately nothing too memorable. Instead, I was given an epic tale over two dozen hours long with a surprisingly robust combat system that balanced and meshed together mechanics I didn’t think it would. Not as well as it did, anyway. Couple that with a world full of things to explore, memorable characters, beautiful set pieces, challenging encounters and the momentum to keep all of this up throughout, it’s no wonder I enjoyed the game as much as I did.

Stray

7.5

With all that being said, while I don’t think Stray is great enough to compete with the very best indie games released (both this year and the last), it’s still a good game. And for 30 USD it’s not going to break the bank either. Especially for those wanting a slightly different platforming experience, one without a bipedal at the helm.

At the end of the day, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is loaded with even more content and more ways to play said content. The changes to the weapons, to the gear and the added variety in both monsters and locale, make this an easy recommendation for anyone who enjoys the game and wants reasons to either keep playing or to come back. If you haven’t gotten your fill of hunting monsters yet, Elgado Outpost could surely use your help.

Echo Generation

6.8

There’s a lot to like about this game. The setting is intriguing, the characters are fun, and the art style can be spectacular. However, problems with some pretty core concepts bring the overall experience down. In conclusion, while Echo Generation has solid visuals and music, these are sadly out shadowed by clunky combat and frustrating game design.

Hades

Hades

9.2

We started off this review by asking if Hades lives up to the praise and expectations. And the answer (which should be obvious if you’ve been paying attention) is a resounding YES. Hades has perfected several elements of the rogue-like genre and does a banging job on the rest. It is, by far, the best game of its type that I’ve played. But don’t let the words “rogue-like” scare you off – it is made in such a way that it is appealing to both fans and non-fans of the genre alike.
