Cat Quest III is a short, fun game with simple but interesting combat that will keep you occupied for a few evenings. While largely a standalone, there are plenty of nods to the previous games in the series.
As the name implies, Cat Quest III is the third outing for this action-adventure series. The first outing hit the scene back in 2017, followed by a sequel two y
Cat Quest III serves as a fantastic introduction to this charming franchise. With surprisingly deep combat, intriguing exploration, and wild story turns, the game kept me up far later than I intended for several nights in a row. Appropriate for the kids, but good enough that Dad soon booted the kids off the controller and took over. If you can stand the endless puns, this is a great, breezy action RPG that will entertain the entire family for hours.
Getting overexcited for big spectacle games is too much of a regular occurrence in our industry. Rarely is focus spent on the smaller scoped but incredibly well-executed projects. We need to go back to our roots. We need to give flowers to simple and clean games, much like the wise, iconic words of Hilary Utada in the Kingdom Hearts series’ soundtrack. Cat Quest III is exactly this, an underdog that is an utter delight and never overextends its welcome or ambition. It’s also one of the be...
The latest entry in the Cat Quest series showers us with more quests, more secrets, and way more fun. A textbook example of how to properly make a sequel that doesn't overstay its welcome.
Cat Quest 3 pulls off a balancing act that few games manage to. It is accessible enough for nearly anyone to jump in while being fun and engaging enough for players who prefer more mechanically dense RPGs to still have a ton of fun. It is oversaturated with personality and charm, making every minute of playing it filled with something funny, interesting, or unique.
Ticking all the right boxes to keep one engaged, yet doing little else to stand out even in the confines of its own series, Cat Quest III provides a competent, at times charmingly so, quest for better loot and better opportunities to use it all on. How well you fair on that latter objective will depend on how detrimental you rate a kind of simplistic combat, whose only true barrier to entry are the gear numbers the game ends up dictated by. Yet even with this reliance on player levels and hidden numbers to deducw, what it may lack (or deliberately ignore) in depth, it makes up for with a sufficient loop of activities to hunt down and well-implemented visuals on top. Whether a fan of the series prior or entirely new to what The Gentlebros usually cook up, Cat Quest III still manages to make its island-hopping adventure, a curious one all the same.
I don’t think Cat Quest III is going to blow anyone away, but I think it is entirely worthy to be in this franchise. Do you like fun action RPG games that focus on solid, simple game mechanics? Do you like cats? Do you enjoy exploring and finding things to do in the world, searching around for a bit, and then going through the game again? Then you’re going to get your money’s worth and more from Cat Quest III.
Cat Quest III is an excellent 2.5D open-world RPG with fun characters and even a pirate ship to pilot. My only issue is that the puns can get to be a bit much by the time you reach the end!
As I mentioned earlier, Cat Quest III is about exploration, and while the story is straightforward enough, there’s lots of side-questing to do to keep you occupied for a few hours beyond what the story offers. For example, there’s a large inflatable pirate duck that roams the map and becomes hostile when you attack it. I recommend waiting until you’re closer to level 100 before engaging in this balloon bird. With lots of puzzles around the map and lots to explore, Cat Quest III can keep you occupied beyond the story, just not for a whole lot longer. I imagine it would take around 10 hours at the most to see everything Cat Quest III has to offer.
Cat Quest III is a remarkably simple but fun adventure game for all ages. I enjoyed its numerous pirate, cat, dog, and rat puns all the while taking on foes of all sizes. There’s a good amount of weapon and armour types and the challenges can keep those of all ages busy, be it alone or with a family slash friend. A pirate adventure that is truly fur everyone. ∎
Now in their third iteration, the Cat Quest games have always been a combination of action RPG and a cat pun delivery system. There are more cat-related puns, jokes, and other references per square inch than you can imagine. Cat Quest 3 is pirate themed, adding a whole new opportunity for puns and wordplay. It’s a purrfect arrrangement. I’ll stop now. No more littering the review with bad jokes.
