Citizens of Space

As of the time of writing, it’s unknown when Nintendo is going to get around to releasing a new Mario RPG in either of the franchises that it’s been developing over the last several years. For what Citizens of Space is, it's hard to find much fault with it - a not overly long, light-hearted, witty jaunt through a surprisingly well written and well playing inter-galactic adventure.

Citizens of Space is the follow-up to the 2015 RPG Citizens of Earth, and features the same tongue-in-cheek humor and goofy art style. While the original game was fun it unfortunately suffered from sluggish pacing and repetitive gameplay. You can definitely tell that this is something the developer, Eden Industries, has tried to address to varying degrees of success.

Citizens of Space is the follow up to Citizens of Earth and it looks to maximize the fun grind of being an ode to old school RPG’s while remedying some of the complaints that players of the first game had. Game makers Eden Industries had clearly listened to its community and worked hard to make the sequel more focused on fun and less on the management of your squad. While they succeed in maximizing the fun, they never really make it out of the woods of repetition and the end result falls somewhere in the middle of a whacky ode to a favorite genre of mine and a grind that loses it quirky appeal...

At first glance, it is entirely possible to mistake Citizens of Space’s toon-ish look and setting for a PG-rated video game version of Rick and Morty. In reality, it is actually a loose sequel to the 2015 JRPG, Citizens of Earth.

Citizens of Space brings quite a bit to the table, offering players an impressive variety of systems with which to engage, and turn-based combat with many unique ideas and a myriad of options. It takes risks in opting for a humor-driven story rather than a more traditional one, but do these risks pay off?
