Conan Chop Chop offers a (mostly) lovingly violent local co-up dungeon crawling experience. Sadly, a few too many frustrating gameplay issues rather take the shine off what would otherwise be a brilliant party game.
With a simple but cute art style that’s hard not to love, and an enjoyable gameplay loop that sees you hacking and slashing your way through a range of well-designed enemies, there’s plenty to like about Conan Chop Chop. If you dig roguelikes and enjoy being challenged to improve yourself with each subsequent run, it’s well worth jumping into.
Conan Chop Chop is the video game equivalent of running in place. For every fun inclusion, there is another aspect that feels left behind.
I still remember Conan Chop Chop‘s first reveal as an actual game in development, and not just some silly April Fool’s joke. Furthermore, I had the chance of playing it back at E3 2019 ( nearly three years ago), expecting nothing from it, yet nearly missing out on later appointments that same day because I simply didn’t want to stop playing it. A Conan roguelike featuring silly humor and Cyanide & Happiness-esque visuals didn’t sound like a match made in heaven, but the folks at Might...
If you don’t have friends to play with, there are better-balanced roguelites with more exciting power-ups out there. But if you’ve tried all the classics and are looking for an easy-to-learn co-op roguelite, Conan Chop Chop contains a solid amount of fun.
When you think of Conan the Barbarian, the images that come to mind are gritty and violent. Certainly nothing quite like the lighthearted take that Aussie dev team Mighty Kingdom have taken with Conan Chop Chop. This 1-4 player roguelite comes with a lot more surprises packed into its disarming and quite charming appearance.
Opening up the gruesome and adult world of Conan to school-aged children is a hilarious surprise but Chop Chop’s greatest feat is lowering the rogue-lite barrier of entry for the curious solo adventurer or group only to slay them mercilessly.
There aren’t too many roguelites that let players join up together to take on the quest, let alone offer an array of characters that do very different things. Conan Chop Chop may have once started as a joke and took a few years to get here, but there is quite some fun and glory to be had in this adventure. It will be better with friends along for the ride, and even then, luck can be unmerciful. That said, Conan Chop Chop's massive amount of weapons and Gear allow for a wide array of play styles on each character. Mix the chaos of co-op into that and This game is more of an extended good time than simply an April Fools punchline.
