Cosmic Star Heroine Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Cosmic Star Heroine is an homage to classic 90s sci-fi RPGS, and it works really well to evoke that sense of adventure. It may be a short affair, but its combat mechanics are tight, the drudgery of traditional JRPGs is wiped away by clever design decisions, and at fifteen bucks, it's well worth the price of entry. Recommended.

On the balance of things, Cosmic Star Heroine’s excellent combat system and well-executed retro stylings make it a must for those who hold the classic JRPGs of the past close to their hearts. It’s a shame that the story doesn’t grab you as much as it should, as otherwise, it would stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the greats. But it is what it is, and that’s still a bloody good 2D RPG with hours upon hours of quality gameplay to offer.

Cosmic Star Heroine is a fun space adventure and throwback to the 16 Bit era of JRPGs while also bringing enough unique ideas to stand all on its own.

Cosmic Star Heroine is the perfect example of a crowdfunded indie game that might have been held back by budget and time. I enjoyed everything the game had to offer, but I was was left wanting more than a short RPG experience with an overused premise. If you're looking for a gorgeous 16-bit RPG with a unique battle system and a short campaign than Cosmic Star Heroine is going to resonate with you perfectly, but if you're looking for a story that will stick with you over the years than you probably should look elsewhere.

Playing through took me about 12 hours, though it might take more or less time if you bump up the difficulty or stick to the critical path. None of the problems I had with this game are insurmountable, and I’m hoping that Zeboyd will be able to fix them with an update. In spite of the bugs, I enjoyed exploring the galaxy with Alyssa and her crew, but you may want to wait for a patch or two before mainlining this Heroine.

Cosmic Star Heroine is an accessible RPG that fits very well with the Switch’s lineup. While some issues like bugs and an underwhelming story hold it back from being an RPG classic, the experience is propelled by its innovative and creative combat system and eclectic cast of characters.

Aug 6, 2018 Read Review

Cosmic Star Heroine takes inspiration from some of the best RPGs of yesteryear, such as Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star, and Suikoden. This combination is tantalizing to any RPG fan who loves to wax nostalgic about the genre's early days. Zeboyd Games also makes its own mark by providing a modern spin on old-school mechanics, especially its fun, turn-based battle system. The developers' passion and knowledge for the genre shows; I had my share of fun, but wish the game packed more of a punch.

Announced as early as 2013, Zeboyd Games' long-awaited retro RPG Cosmic Star Heroine finally touched down on PlayStation 4.

May 5, 2017 Read Review

This is a homage to the classic sci-fi RPGs of the '90s that successfully takes out many of the annoying bits but boasts a fair amount of the depth and consistency. Cosmic Star Heroine is a JRPG for those who long ago grew bored of JRPGs, but committed fans might find it just a little too slight an offering.

Over a year after its initial blast-off, Zeboyd Games' planet-hopping secret agent RPG has landed on Nintendo's newest handheld. Does the Switch version show signs of intelligent life, or is it a Black Hole imploding in on itself?
