Creatures of Ava controls well on the Steam Deck, but the game seems poorly optimized, leading to sub-30 FPS at points, as well as stuttering.

The planet of Ava is under threat from a life-consuming infection, and you’re the only one who can save it. Well, in theory, at least. Creatures of Ava is a creature-saving game that focuses on non-aggressive combat so that you can cleanse the planet of an infection known as The Withering, rescuing all of the adorable creatures you can while giving them cute pats along the way. It’s an action-adventure game with a cozy twist, and exploring its various ecosystems, clearing the infection an...

Creatures of Ava stars Victoria "Vic" Hamilton, an environmental scientist working for an intergalactic corporation. Her mission: to save the dying planet Ava from a little-understood, rapidly spreading infection called "the withering," by evacuating as much of its flora and fauna as possible before it consumes them all. And that's just what the player spends most of their time doing: solving simple, yet elegant puzzles by charming and controlling animals, and eventually zapping them into space. It all amounts to a very ambitious game that balances innovation with familiarity, even while it suffers from issues with pacing and polish.

Worldbuilding is pretty important when making games. A rich world full of cool characters and adorable wildlife goes a long way towards a good game. On the other hand, worldbuilding only gets you so far. At least for me, the core gameplay loop has to be equally engaging. Creatures of Ava presents a vibrant world, but I struggled to stay in it. Something about that essential loop couldn’t keep me hooked. Not the way I was hoping for.

Creatures of Ava is a mixed bag when it comes to mechanics, but it’s a game I couldn’t stop playing once I saw the beauty under its surface. The world of Ava is one of the most compelling environments I’ve explored in a video game in some time, and its subversion of worn-out story tropes is nothing short of brilliant. Where most games make playing the hero about laying waste to your enemies, Creatures of Ava provides a needed counterpoint by showing that you can’t always be the hero, and not every story even needs one.

Creatures of Ava is a heartwarming love letter to the action adventure games of old. A captivating tale of empathy and reflection, its story will leave you pondering its teaching moments long after the credits roll. This title is pure charm, hampered only by a number of shallow features that feel like they don't belong.

Creatures of Ava is a wonderful adventure that wraps together an interesting story about humankind's view of nature, exploration of a beautiful alien world, and interesting creature taming mechanics. While I'd wish to continue exploring this game a major detriment is how you get locked out of half the game as you play through it.

Creatures of Ava is a deeply human game about monsters on an alien planet. Its themes of empathy and acceptance shine brightly, setting itself apart from similar titles. It manages to deliver a thoughtful message about acceptance and living in harmony while also being something I can play to kick back and relax after a long day.

Creatures of Ava, even with lots of rough edges, deliver an impactful message. How can we help those who we don’t understand? If you’re looking for a game with a new take on the conservation topic, there is no better game to represent it than Creatures of Ava.

As far as bugs or issues with the game go I didn’t have any major bugs but I do have some issues. A few of the biomes feature plants that explode when you get close. In the first area, they not only deal damage but blind you for ten seconds as well. In the second, instead of making you blind, they stick you in place until you press the B button numerous times. There are booster drinks you can take to make their secondary effects be negated but I found those damned plants ruined the flow of gameplay for me...

Creatures of Ava is a mostly mediocre experience with few things to keep you interested and, across the board, rather mediocre execution of its ideas.

Creatures of Ava is what you get when you simply dump a bunch of ideas into a bucket. The mechanics feel disconnected, the story is rote and uninteresting, and the world, while very pretty, looks generic for sci-fi. It’s all been done before and better elsewhere, and sadly the game doesn’t take the chance to connect anything together or really explore anything in depth.

A genuinely pleasant surprise, Creatures of Ava is an excellent adventure game for those who want something a little less demanding and stressful than the mainstream. Gathering the titular creatures is an enjoyable experience, but so is exploring this beautiful world and engaging with its mysterious and quirky denizens. Excellently written and gorgeously animated, there's a great deal to love here.
