Curses 'N Chaos Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Curses ‘N Chaos is an example of game purity. One screen, simple controls, and intense difficulty. There isn’t much replayability outside of playing with new friends or going for a new high score, but just getting through all of the stages the first time will not be quick. For players who fancy a challenge, either solo or with a friend, Curses ‘N Chaos is not one to miss.
Although Curses ‘N Chaos is a very addicting game that’s incredibly rewarding once beat, its difficulty cannot be stressed enough. Despite its fun, humorous style and peppy chiptune soundtrack, it is not a game for the casual player and requires a great deal of patience and skill to complete. The uppercut, mach punch, jumpkick, and normal attack must be mastered with the tenacity of a Shaolin Monk in order to proceed. Enemies that once seemed easy in earlier stages become gruellingly difficult when mixed with the attack patterns of new monsters. It’s a hard mix between dodging with your double...
In Curses ‘n Chaos, you must fight through the hordes who seek to extinguish your life, thanks to a curse that was placed on the protagonists, Lea and Leo. Fortunately, they aren’t alone. In Tribute Games’ latest endeavour, they opted for a different take on the couch co-op/beat-em-up titles many of us hold in such high regard. You’ll battle plenty of enemies across a variety of locations, but you’re confined to one screen. Thankfully, you have the aid of a plucky Alchemist known as Allison and her companion, Owliver, who will happily pick up a spare item for you to store for later. These item...
The game’s shortcomings certainly aren’t born from a lack of drive or talent. The second you boot up the game, an opening cutscene with the studio’s illustrious sprite work establishes itself as acres beyond the typical procedurally generated retro-homage game. In conjunction with charming gothic imagery that takes a page out of Castlevania’s book, these stunning high-res, fluidly animated characters provide the game its soul. At the same time, players are serenaded by 8-bit beats so groovy they ought to be classified as a safety hazard (seriously, I was jamming and bobbing my head lik…
Curses N’ Chaos is a good arena brawler that throws you right into the action. It may not be the most graphical intensive games out there, but Tribute Games has created something that you can get engrossed in really quickly. You will die a lot to make progress, and that may not be for everyone, but if you like your brawlers, then Curses ‘N Chaos is certainly worth a look.
