A high quality re-package that gives series newcomers the best bang for their buck while remaining lots of fun for competitive and casual gamers alike. Still, the Ultimate edition perks aren't substantial incentive for current Dead or Alive 5 owners.
Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate is a refinement done right. Not only is it the definitive version for new players, it also provides enough new options for fans of the series to enjoy. Those who enjoy the world of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate need not fear -- Ultimate is tournament-worthy.
It’s been less than a year since we last went toe-to-toe with Team Ninja’s curious cleavage meets combat comeback Dead or Alive 5, and now – following a temporary detour on the PlayStation Vita – we’re strapping up our appendages and digging out our most inappropriate fighting gear again. As its name so effortlessly illustrates, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate is less of a sequel and more of an enhanced re-release – but does it have the strength to usurp its more established rivals in its third (and possibly final) foray into the ring?
The animations are a delight to watch. Every fighter has a unique fighting style, and you can just tell between them. Each fighter has their own moves, their own combos, and even if some of them share the same button inputs, they will look different enough to be unique. The whole thing comes together nicely to form some of the most fluid and better looking fights I’ve seen in the genre, and the faster and harder the fights get, the more you realize how ineffective button mashing and repeating similar moves becomes, forcing you to change up and vary your combos.
