Discounty has the best supermarket game mechanic, but the story leaves something to be desired.
Discounty is a delightful shop management game, with lovely tactile checkout gameplay, cosy vibes and a wonderful sense of progression.
Where Your Dollar Counts
Prior to my current job, I worked in retail for a decade. One of the few reasons I was able to leave the house during COVID was to stock shelves and hear customers complain about having to buy a second pasta maker because their first one was stuck at their beach house. I broke down boxes, dealt with problematic bosses and tactfully avoided the regular angry customer. During this period, I actually earned a reputation for being very good at organising the warehouse, meaning I spent most of my ...
Discounty is the right type of cozy game that you can get completely lost inside for a few days. It thrives in the "Just one more day" zone and has an addictive loop that feels good as a distraction from the real world. At the end of the day, I wish it went a bit deeper with some of its systems to make the grocery store sim aspects a little more fleshed out, and some optimization hiccups are genuine bummers and frustrations at times. Still, I've enjoyed my time in the small town of Blomkest and feel ready to run my own store someday.
The capitalist drive to achieve even greater profit is a compelling loop in Discounty, but the narrative around that cycle muddies things.
Discounty is a charming game that makes you feel relaxed, but also intrigued at the same time with several interesting characters and problems in its town. It may lack some depth in few areas of gameplay, but it still presents you with challenges that come with managing a shop.
When it comes to the 2D pixel art cozy genre that Stardew Valley has owned over nearly the last decade, there are a ton of imitators.
Discounty is a solid addition to the Switch’s healthy stable of cosy sims. These games feel right at home on a console you can take anywhere, with a bite-sized day cycle that works just as well for long sessions as it does for quick breaks. Growing your supermarket is a deep and satisfying experience, but getting involved in your customers lives can be a bit shallow. But, most importantly, Discounty manages the impossible task of making retail work fun and relaxing, and that's a feat in itself.
Discounty is a fantastic life sim that offers something unique to fans who think they've seen it all. Just don't get stuck inside any freezers.
A charming pixel art retail management sim with a surprisingly involved plot, whose well-structured gameplay keeps you engaged right up until the disappointingly abrupt ending.
Discounty is a cosy Supermarket simulator in the vein of Stardew Valley. You’ll be ordering products, stocking shelves, and then selling them to the various townsfolk of Blomkest in an effort to expand your business. Unfortunately along with that comes dealing with inattentive local government, shady local businesses, and backstabbing journalists as it seems something in this town is rotten. And all you wanted to do was run a supermarket.
