Professional reviews from gaming critics
Every modification to the gameplay and structure of Dragon Age II is a clear improvement over the previous game. The combat is more responsive and bloody, you don’t need to fight the inventory system anymore, and conversations are more engaging thanks to the adapted Mass Effect wheel. There are downsides though; the semi-linear story and repetitive environments have a negative effect on what is otherwise a great role-playing game. Despite these complaints, Dragon Age II is a game I’m eager to replay.
Despite the way narrative has been re-structured and the combat made meatier, this sequel follows the old conventions of the genre too literally to develop an individuality beyond them.
Again, stay tuned for a separate PC review.
Let it never be said that BioWare doesn't know how to craft an epic. The developer has taken the science-fiction RPG into the stratosphere with Mass Effect and given The Lord of the Rings a good run for its money in the fantasy stakes with Dragon Age: Origins. While purists will argue that Mass Effect and Dragon Age aren't strictly pure RPG experiences, there's no denying that each game is an action/role-playing hybrid that invariably exudes quality.
While overall it feels as if Dragon Age 2 is lacking a particular more fine coating of polish than its predecessor has, Dragon Age 2 is without a doubt a great game. Hopefully Bioware will be able to find a comfortable medium between Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2. And there will be a third game, as evidenced by the rather disappointing cliffhanger ending we were presented with at the end of this game.
We at RPGamer love BioWare games. Just look at our end of year award features for quick proof. While the blood and guts and boobs and butts were more prevalent in Origins, we found Dragon Age 2 to be the more shallow, vapid game.
