Driver: San Francisco has one game-changing, eyebrow-raising idea and it pulls it off with aplomb, infusing the OTT arcade racing with unparalleled variety and a ridiculous supernatural twist whilst staying true to its Seventies chase-movie roots. After over a seven year hiatus, Ubisoft’s much vaunted Driver series is back. This is the first Driver game on this current generation of consoles, and naturally it comes with some new twists. So with this in mind, is this the first big title after the slow summer season? Let’s shift this review out of neutral, smoke the tires and find out.
Gamers play as Detective John Tanner on a relentless manhunt for crime lord Charles Jericho through the hills of the City by the Bay. With its timeless setting, unique car handling and renewed playability, and over 100 licensed vehicles, Driver San Francisco will revitalize the classic free-roaming, cinematic car chase experience.
Underneath Driver’s pitfalls, there is fun to be had. This game doesn’t manage to eradicate the misfortunes of the past, nor does it build on them. Ubisoft have tried their utmost to get this once revered body back into shape, but there’s plenty of bruises along the way. As we enter the major gaming season, a title with such flaws will struggle desperately, as the love-or-hate recipe will see this one fall into obscurity before 2011 is over.
