Dungeon Punks

Despite a gorgeous art style and good attempt at RPG progression, both the gameplay and interface are just too clunky to make Dungeon Punks stand out from the crowd.

Graphically, Dungeon Punks is rather nice; the sprites are well drawn and the backgrounds are colourful and vibrant. The music is rather generic though – in fact, so much so that my nine-year-old son was adamant he had heard it before in another game. It’s a shame that for all the time Hyper Awesome have spent creating and refining the character progression, magical abilities, story and upgrades, they have seemingly forgotten to actually make sure the game plays well. Dungeon Punks tries to be a throwback to classic arcade brawlers like Golden Axe and Dungeons & Dragons: Tower of Doom. However, its mind-numbingly repetitive combat means it falls well short of its ambitions.

Melding a brawler with an RPG has been done before, but this one offers something different. Beating up unicorns and fighting from their backs is not a common occurrence, after all. Stop hitting me when I can't fight back!

Dungeon Punks is a side-scrolling RPG Brawler which has a unique Tag-Team fighting system and Local Player vs. Player Brawl Mode. The game is set in a fantasy world of magic, mystery, and corporate greed. Recruit a crew of up to six mutant heroes who will battle with your enemies with their crazy magical spells and attack combos. Real-time party play allows you to take control of any of the heroes fighting alongside you at any time. This game reminds me of the popular indie title Charlie Murder, with all of the wacky and wonderful scenario’s that took place.
