Fate/EXTELLA LINK is every anime lovers’ dream. The action explodes on-screen with intense music and vibrant visuals. The game runs at 60 Frames-per-second for an incredibly smooth gameplay experience. The music also underscores the universal high stakes excitement of the scenario of the game. There is more than just diverse level design and combat, but also in playable characters as well, with more characters from the Fate franchise enters the battlefield.

The Fate series makes its debut on the Switch. Although at first glance it may seem like a Dynasty Warriors clone, Fate/EXTELLA LINK adds to the tried-and-true formula by speeding up the combat, adding more moves, and polishing gameplay.

Sometimes it feels like there’s no room for innovation left in the hack n’ slash genre. When it comes to felling dozens of enemies with a single move, the Warriors (Musou) series of games have perfected the formula, with dozens of spin-offs, mainline games and collaborations. From One Piece to Zelda, Transformers and beyond, it doesn’t feel like you can add or improve much here.

I must confess that before this game I’d never touched anything having to do with the Fate franchise. Other than a few nonsensical things I’d heard about the series, I went in completely blind to the plot, characters, and basic premise. I do have plenty of experience with Musou styled games however, and the idea of faster gameplay with more character depth was what originally intrigued me. I can say that this is a musou game that I’ll actually go back to after this review is done…which, I believe, is a hell of a seal of approval for a game in this genre. Here’s hoping the next inevitable entry in the Extra/Extella series steps it up even further.

Fate/Extella Link is many things. It’s the third entry in a bizarre trilogy with tons of outside context. It’s a “Musou” game that isn’t actually a Musou game. Over the course of the trilogy we’ve seen the series swap developers, publishers, and even show up on Netflix with an anime adaptation. Technically, it’s not even really a trilogy. It’s weird to include this here, but from a personal angle I’ve covered this series throughout my career, from when I was barely getting started to here at PlayStation Lifestyle, years into the hustle. Fate/Extella Link was pitched as a side story focused on Charlemagne, with a full sequel to The Umbral Star also planned. With that in mind, it accomplishes its task well and introduces many excellent features that I hope to see carried over to the next game.

Overall Fate/EXTELLA LINK improves on the first game with more characters, more things to unlock and solid combat. The story was great although I wish there was more of it. The cutscenes this time are done with hand-drawn 2D characters that remind more of a visual novel type game with some great voice acting. It has been about two years since the release of Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star, and now Marvelous is finally launching its direct sequel – Fate/EXTELLA LINK in the west. We are lucky to be able to enjoy the game ahead of the western release, which we genuinely like it as the game has improved a lot compared to the previous title.
