If you have already played the DS or iOS version of this game, there may not be enough of a reason to purchase it on Steam now. However, if you missed that opportunity before and want to experience an important part of Final Fantasy’s early evolution, this is an excellent way to do so. The character depth and story detail might feel somewhat lacking compared to newer JRPG titles, but there is an expansive world here that begs for exploration as you grow your characters for future challenges. The overall package is an easy one to recommend.
One review apparently isn't enough for the long absent third Final Fantasy game, so RPGamer's got three.
Final Fantasy II is indeed one of the odder entries in the main canon. The proficiency system can seriously frustrate, as you are actually punished for trying new things rather than sticking to set patterns. But this lengthy adventure certainly has a better narrative than the original Final Fantasy. I recommend Final Fantasy II primarily to existing fans that will enjoy seeing one of their favorites all dressed up and looking good on the iPhone. Newcomers are likely to be put off by the slower pace and proficiency system.
It is only the production values: graphics, music, and pedigree that make this game stand out. At its heart, Final Fantasy III is a dated and mediocre RPG that will only please the most die-hard Final Fantasy fans. With all its problems and the North American release only two months away, with hope that the localization will be an improvement, there is little reason to import Final Fantasy III.
Does that sound like a nightmare to you? It's worth pointing out that this one-way crawl punctuated with battles has always been the meat of Final Fantasy, with the world map acting as an elaborate but limited graphical menu in most games - Final Fantasy XII was the closest to being open-world, and even then just barely. It's the illusion of choice and exploration that's been removed - although that is an important illusion, and XIII has lost a measure of excitement and romance as a result.
