This gorgeous retro platform adventure deftly mixes traditional linear and roguelike elements into one entertaining package.
Foregone offers a fun and addicting challenge as you go through multiple levels of increasing difficulty, acquiring upgradable weapons and gear along with skills and talents to increase your power to meet said challenges! It has high replayability and when you couple that with great visuals and a stunning soundtrack, you’re in for a bit of a treat!
Looks good, plays good, a nice use of souls-like mechanics to penalize players for dying but still lets you run freely and enjoy the game at your own pace; there is a lot to like about Foregone. It lands itself squarely near the top of the 2D action platformer pyramid. A little more depth in the skill tree and a little more oomph in the special abilities could take it to that next level, but it stands on solid footing and offers a class leading experience.
Foregone is an indie action-platformer that seems ready to carve out its own lane in the 2D landscape. Stylistically retro, Foregone is an homage to many of the classic games we know and love, but with an infusion of looter madness and rogue-like quirks. If that wasn’t enough, don’t fret. There will be many more curveballs coming your way.
Foregone, being a 2D action platformer with a Metroidvania structure, looting mechanics and a smattering of soulslike tendencies, is certainly part of a crowded genre. The fact that it manages to stand out from the pack is a high recommendation indeed. This is a fast, fluid and beautiful action title that will keep you playing until the very end. I may never be able to retrieve that planet orbiting pair of socks, but it was totally worth it.
As you could see by reading my previous GoNNER2 review, I am starting to get fed up with indie roguelikes, as the market is currently saturated with way more titles than this genre needs right now. You have no idea how refreshing it is to play a simple, “go from A to B”, action platformer in this day and age. The fact that it’s also really well-crafted is also helpful. Foregone is a title you should check out if you’re looking for a more traditional action platforming fix on your Switch.
Foregone is a graphically gorgeous, if not derivative, romp that struggles to create many memorable moments or differentiate itself from contemporary action-platformers.
Foregone is a very capable Souls-like, full of imaginative bosses and satisfying gameplay. However, fluid movement and a bevy of exciting weapons don't help the game rise above its somewhat forgettable nature. It has all the right components, it just never uses them to great effect.
