Freedom Planet is a wonderful Sonic the Hedgehog-esque game that mixes nostalgia with something new. The quirky characters, fantastic levels, and interesting story will make you not want to put the game down. Each character has their own advantages and disadvantages, encouraging you to test them all out. In the end, it's the whole package, and it's worth picking up.
This is clearly a game that takes its inspiration seriously, and is a lovingly-crafted tribute to a genre of games that a lot of people, are really fond of. No new additions compared to previous releases, but if you haven’t already played this then don’t hesitate to pick it up on the eStore.
Whether it's the engrossing gameplay, endearing character designs or light-hearted plot, Freedom Planet will likely offer something that puts a smile on your face. Plus, it's probably the best Sonic game we're likely to receive for the foreseeable future, even without the presence of the blue-haired hedgehog himself.
Join Lilac and her furry friends in their struggle to get back the kingdom stone and protect Avalice from galactic invaders. This 2D platformer is packed with speed, vehicles, and a fully fleshed out story that will make you crave the 90s again. Massive levels, intense platforming, and three unique playable characters have to fight a host of tough bosses while exploring masterful level design not seen since a certain blue hedgehog paved the way 25 years back.
The voice work is also great, as each voiceover fits its character perfectly. Lilac sounds strong and confident, while Milla is kind and naive. Brevon’s voice in particular stands out, giving off a calculating, and powerful presence that makes the player believe he’s a feared galactic warlord.
Running like a dragon.
While Freedom Planet isn’t a perfect experience, it is still a very enjoyable and easily one of the best Sonic the Hedgehog-esque games I’ve played in years. If you were looking for something to scratch that 16-bit Sonic itch this might be it. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you about the questionable story, voice acting, and late game bosses.
