Hollow Knight

For a moment there I thought I was growing out of video games, but damn has this past six months restored my faith thanks to Hollow Knight, Owlboy, and Breath of the Wild. We are truly living in a new golden age of gaming.

1-2-Switch

1-2-Switch

4.5

I’d have had no hesitation in recommending 1-2-Switch if it were included with the Switch or maybe $20 max, but as it stands it is far too expensive for the dash of entertainment it provides. 1-2-Switch is a good distraction for parties with people who don’t game much, or those looking for something a little different than Cards Against Humanity for the millionth time. Otherwise, wait for a deep price drop.

If you’re a fan of Nier and looking to get your fix until the proper sequel is out, it is easy to recommend Anima. RPGs rarely hold my attention but I happily sank my time into this one no problem. There’s enough quality content here that it feels like the developer or publisher is selling itself short by setting the price so low, as I would have easily been satisfied with this at double the price. It’s even more impressive knowing the game was developed by three people. Just know going in that toward the end, you’re going to be frustrated with some boss fights, pending the developers don’t tweak them in a future update.

Enter the Gungeon
9.5

With tons to find, unlock and kill, Enter the Gungeon is easily recommendable to those that don’t mind a bit of repetition and difficulty, and especially to fans of Nuclear Throne and Binding of Isaac. While it doesn’t totally reinvent the twin-stick shooter, it has all but perfected it and is worth every penny.

9/10

Firewatch is narrative-driven adventure game dealing with adult issues in ways unlike any other game out there, and is one of the best looking games so far this year.

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime reminds me why I love video games, because it provides a unique and colorful journey to get totally immersed in that can be enjoyed with a loved one. Probably the most original game I’ve played to completion in the past five years, and worthy every penny of its asking price. If you’ve got a loved one to play with, do yourselves a favor and play this game as soon as possible, you won’t regret a your lovely journey through space.

Within under ten minutes time you’ll have experienced all the game has to offer; boring boating, equally dull scaling of buildings and peering out a periscope to find the next white and green building to climb. There is no failstate, no urgency, no combat, just moving from point to point and monotonously collecting shit. The story isn’t interesting, the gameplay is boring, everything looks the same aside from a few landmarks, and the whole ordeal is over in no time.
