In the not so distant future, humanity has been driven back from its excess of spirit and periods of insurmountable growth across the United States. With the threat of aliens wiping out civilization and humanity on its last legs, a decisive counterattack is all that keeps humanity from total annihilation. It’s a story that’s been told over and over again in various forms and Japanese developer OneorEight wanted to try their hand at spinning that tale.

There's something about taking on hordes of alien invaders that's still fun decades later. Earth's Dawn combines melee and ranged combat to create one thrilling action-packed adventure so let's suit up and enter E.B.E. territory.

A competent 2D hack and slash with a great manga aesthetic and a deep crafting system. It's not going to blow you away, but there are hours of content to get through if you get hooked on the gameplay. Otherwise, you might find the repetition a little grating by the end of the game.

Due to its mission structure, Earth’s Dawn’s main issue is that it can easily become quite repetitive, but it also doesn’t help that its narrative is anything but compelling. Once you get caught in its loop of taking on missions and building your character however, you don’t tend to think about its problems too much. You’re more likely to be too busy smashing monsters in the face with a giant broadsword so you can level it up for that +2 ATK boost that you’ve always dreamed of to care. Earth's Dawn is a 2D, loot-heavy brawler with a post-apocalyptic theme. It's got a lot in common with Vanillaware titles such as Dragon's Crown and Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir, except it's keen to ditch pretty fantasy settings and settle for a ruined grey world complete with a gigantic underground tunnel system that's teeming with juddering, evil mutants. It's certainly an intriguing backdrop for an action role-playing release, but it unfortunately won't be long until you're eager for something a little different.

Even with its flaws, I think many people will enjoy Earth’s Dawn, but I don’t expect it to be a hit or even a cult classic. If anything those starved for something similar to Odin’s Sphere or an RPG-style beat ’em-up might get some enjoyment out of it, while most will find the repetition a bit too much.
