Front Mission 1st: Remake

FRONT MISSION is a turn-based strategy RPG gem that's been around for a long time and it's now back and remade for Nintendo Switch.

Forever Entertainment's modern crack at a classic strategy RPG has its highs and lows, but I walk away from it feeling stoked for the Wanzer warfare remakes to come.

Front Mission 1st would have benefitted from a full remake to address a lot of quibbles that are holdovers from the era it is originally from; however, even as-is, warts and all, the premise and core loop remain fun enough that series and genre enthusiasts, at least, will get a fair bit out of it.

While Front Mission 1st didn’t set my world on fire, and I found it lacking in a lot of areas, I did enjoy it. It’s not the best tactical strategy game to come out this year, but it’s welcome nonetheless. It’s also a great and loving remaster of the Super Famicom title, and while there are places I wish it was tightened up, I’m overall happy about it. It leaves me excited to play the next two remasters as they work their way to release.

It's time to enlist, soldier! Forever Entertainment brings a fresh coat of paint on Square Enix's long-running Front Mission series. Despite lacking substantial quality of life improvements, Front Mission: 1st Remake is a great re-introduction to the series.

Some people enjoy turn-based combat simply for the thrill of the kill. For a 27-year-old game with only minor changes this is still an enjoyably taxing tactical role-player but it’s new games this series needs, not more remakes.
