FUEL definitely isn't a perfect game, but it just happens to nail the open world-structured racer better than any other game of this kind that I have played, and that includes Need For Speed and Burnout. At the same time, it is a highly misunderstood game that seemed to intimidate and confuse a lot of people, causing them to dismiss the title altogether. As a result, the huge map size is all people will remember FUEL for. And that's an unnecessarily harsh fate for such an ambitious and enjoyable arcade racer.
Think Fallout 3 meets Burnout Paradise and you're along the right lines. There's a loose story about global warming and a lack of fossil fuels, but this is a racing game through and through. You enter races, earn credits, buy better vehicles and win more races.
After putting in numerous hours with Fuel, I've struggled to find anything that I especially like about it. The racing has issues, but in and of itself (outside of not being able to select a ride you might want), it works well enough. Not great, but well enough. If you play the game and just skip all of the collection crap (unless you have a ton of time to kill) and just simply move from race to race via the menus, you might be able to squeeze out an experience that isn't painful. But don't go wandering and expect to find anything cool - it's all just wasted space.
