Professional reviews from gaming critics
Funk of Titans wants to draw players in with an outlandish, seemingly arbitrary aesthetic that mixes Greek mythology with funk music. Unfortunately, it fails to go all the way with this theme, and ends up a tedious and surprisingly generic auto-runner.
For almost the entirety of the two and half hours it took me to complete Funk of Titans, I was bored. The world design is awkward, and for a game about music, it lacked a variety of catchy tunes or even appropriate themes. I chuckled a bit at the silly hats and weapons, and some of the final levels showed a spark of life, but Funk of Titans is ultimately an unsatisfying experience.
Funk of Titans feels like a free game you’d download from the app store to kill a few hours and then delete the same day. If it was free, then you could justify the short repetitive gameplay and clunky controls, but given that it costs £4.99, you’d be better off buying a book or a few CDs, both of which would last a lot longer and will give you more enjoyment.
Chris: I would be okay with never hearing “Daddy-o” ever again. But yeah, there aren’t many runners on consoles, and the genre deserved better. They can be special at times and at the very least a fun time waster, but funk this.
Funk of Titans isn't funky, fresh, or even fun. Unless players really want a short, mobile game like experience then they should avoid this game completely.
Funk of Titans feels like a game that would be perfectly at home on a mobile device, which isn't surprising given that this is the studio's first console title. That isn't to downplay the importance of mobile gaming, or to overlook the great strides that mobile games are taking of late. Rather, it's to declare that this is an overly-simplistic and undercooked game that isn't what you'd expect from a console title at this price point. This is far from an unplayably awful game, but there's very, very little depth here, and what is presented is incredibly repetitive to say the least.
Looking beyond the intricacies of the premise and the music genre usage and it being a fairly short game, Funk of Titans is pretty much an a-ok game for its price. Overall, being a runner game, it does offer a quick challenge for those that are into the genre. The side objective of perfecting the stages is really not that hard to do but it definitely adds a couple more hours of play time. Also, the references and the humor used was light and it added to the whole fun feeling that it tries to give out. Funk of Titans is definitely a must-play that we recommend.
