Ghostbusters is 100% a movie that defines the era it was made. That isn’t to mean that it hasn’t aged well. The fact that the 2016 Paul Feig reboot of the franchise can’t hold a candle to Ivan Reitman’s original is proof of that. It will never be confused with Gone with the Wind, but it’s a movie that instantly takes you right back to the 80’s. Ghostbusters The Video Game is no different. It will never be confused for The Last of Us or God of War, but it doesn’t want to be. It w...

It's the actors' love for the franchise which makes this game still stand out, even 10 years later.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered has some good things going for it. A fun story, excellent voice work from the original cast, and a nice new shine to the visuals, all making the campaign feel solid. The removal of multiplayer and a lack of polish on the cutscenes make this feel a little rushed, though. If you are a fan of the brand, you will enjoy this game, but if you never really cared for the Ghostbusters, then this won’t change your mind.

At its core, Ghostbuster: The Video Game Remastered still follows the same plot but with major improvements to its design.

More than a decade ago now the iconic Ghostbusters movie franchise got what creator, writer, and star Dan Aykroyd dubbed its third entry in video game form. Set in 1991, two years after the events of Ghostbusters 2, the original PS3 release was widely considered to be somewhat of a diamond in the rough. These ten years later the same rings true; Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered remains fun in its own right and a particular treat for established franchise fans.

While it hasn't aged gracefully, Ghostbusters; The Video Game Remastered is still a fun time. Crappy AI aside, the combat, puzzles and collectables make it worth playing.

Make no mistake, Ghostbusters: The Video Game is a personal favourite purely for its loving attention to detail and will always rank amongst gaming’s most faithful and memorable movie adaptations – more than worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as The Warriors, Alien: Isolation, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay in that regard. But this marginally prettier and inconsistent remaster doesn’t really make for a profoundly different or improved experience over the 2009 original, and there was a lot of room for improvements that could’ve made it more enjoyable to play through and appreciate all of that fan service.

Fans of the original Ghostbusters: The Video Game will probably enjoy this, even if it’s just for a trip down memory lane and to see the cast again and visit some iconic locations. But due to its repetitive combat, insufferable artificial intelligence, and dull gameplay, I would advise first-time players to maybe pick up something else if you’re looking for an enjoyable and fulfilling third-person shooter.

It always put nostalgia first and gameplay second, but 10 years on and Ghostbusters: The Video Game just feels like mediocre fan fiction.

The visuals are the most notably dated part of Ghostbusters Remastered, though the pre-rendered cutscenes still hold up quite well. The faces can dip into the uncanny valley a bit, and cutscenes can feel a bit stiff, but the colorful ghosts and lively environments hold up beautifully. Going through themed haunted sections of a history museum or through a fragmented castle that is half-enveloped by the Ghost World is a grand combination of spooky and thrilling, with plenty of visual humor to further supplement the tone. The use of the film’s music is obviously perfect, while the original tracks are quite memorable by their own right.

While licensed tie-in video games to film franchises have a rough reputation, Ghostbusters: The Video Game in 2009 sought to be a worthy successor to the two live-action films. Featuring the voices and likenesses of the original cast and a story penned by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, it stayed true to the tone and style that fans expected, with many considering it effectively the canonical Ghostbusters 3. Now we seem to be getting an actual canonical third Ghostbusters movie, and the Video G...
