While I had fun with Gun Jam for a few hours, its meager offerings make it feel like a solid proof of concept rather than a complete game. If you want a rhythm-based arena shooter that lets you blast enemies to your favorite songs, it might be worth playing. But if you want anything more than that, it will likely hit a flat note.
In its current state though, it doesn’t feel like it’s worth its $20 (USD) price tag. Unless you’re ok with the extra work of digging through its file folders to import your own music that is, because as the game is right now, you can burn through all of its 10-track base game content in less than an hour. And there's nothing much else to it beyond that.
GUN JAM had so much potential to be great, but it’s just missing so much extra detail. The game is interesting and a joy to play at first but it loses that luster very quickly once you realize there isn’t much else to the game.
BPM: Bullets per Minute and Metal: Hellsinger were two games released in recent times which mixed two of my favorite gaming genres into one: music-based rhythm and neanderthal, balls-to-the-wall first-person shooting (or, as the kids like to call them, “boomer shooters”). Naturally, any other game featuring said hybridization of elements would be something I’d be interesting in giving a shot, so I was looking forward to playing Gun Jam, which promised to blend both genres even further, ...
Gun Jam fails to capitalize on a novel idea through its unpolished and at odds mechanics. There’s not much content here and what is there isn’t particularly fun.
