Halo: Spartan Assault

Halo: Spartan Assault feels like a Halo game, which is no small feat considering it plays very differently from the original first-person shooter that set the genre standard on consoles. As a twin-stick shooter, Spartan Assault has more in common with Robotron and Geometry Wars, but it still hits almost all of the traditional notes of a Halo game.

Spartan Assault is a fairly weird release in general. Not only does it feel like it could have been a completely new IP, but I’m not sure who the audience is, given the strong console allegiance of the Halo franchise. But despite its lack of any remarkable or “must have” features, it still manages to be a fairly decent top-down shooter.

Spartan Assault is simple but entertaining.

I bought the first version of Halo: Spartan Assault for my Surface RT earlier this year.  As I played I found that my enjoyment of the virtual twin-stick shooter was hampered by the touchscreen controls offered, as I am truly a fan analog sticks, not presses on a touchscreen that emulate a true joystick of any kind.  I really yearned for controller support, which was patched in later, but I don’t ...

If you own a Windows tablet or Windows phone, just play this on those devices instead if you must. Even if you are a huge Halo fan, there is absolutely no reason to shell out $15 for this game when you can play the exact same game for $7 on mobile devices.
