Heart&Slash Reviews
Professional reviews from gaming critics
Heart&Slash successfully transitions roguelike gameplay into the third-dimension with its fluid, fast-paced (and challenging) combat. Fiercely battling through hordes of enemies is thoroughly satisfying, thanks to the diverse supply of weapons unlocked at a consistent rate. Its retro-reminiscent graphics and soundtrack are both very stylish, though some more musical diversity would certainly be welcome. Aside from some glaring camera issues and the odd technical blemish, Heart&Slash presents exactly what the title suggests: a lot of slashing, and a lot of heart.
Heart & Slash is a hardcore game built on top of a niche genre, but I think a lot of people will appreciate it. Even then, those same folks won’t dig the frame rate and camera issues, but the juice is still worth the squeeze.
Indie games that attempt to recreate specific moments in gaming are always interesting experiments. Heart&Slash feels like a long-lost 3D arena combat brawler for Dreamcast so plug in your VMU and get ready to fight!
A fun third person roguelite that you will pick up to play a round and spend far too long trying to get just that bit further.
Heart&Slash is fast-paced, 3D brawler where you'll hack and slash (pun intended) your way through a bright and dangerous world. Set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans no longer exist and robots have taken over, you assume the role of Heart, a kind-hearted but brutally murderous machine with sword in hand, that's trying to escape the evil clutches of QuAsSy (Quality Assurance System). In order to do this, you have to battle your way through a series of randomly generated rooms, each filled with various destructive robots equipped with a variety of unique weapons. Oh, and if you die, you'll h...
The PS4 version of Heart&Slash was primarily tested for the purpose of this review.
Hearth&Slash has a lot of great ideas. On paper, a Devil May Cry roguelike is probably one of the most amazing ideas ever. Unfortunately, the reality of that idea never lives up to that promise. The roguelike features were relatively basic compared to games like Rogue Legacy. The action gameplay was nowhere near as satisfying as Metal Gear Rising. In the end, Heart & Slash just made me wish I was playing one of those games instead of this one.
