Metroidvanias are the purest form of video games. Most games have some sort of progress track, a sense of exploration, and gameplay loops that indicate you’ve grown in strength. But despite a strong foundational idea, good Metroidvanias, really good ones that can create a sense of atmosphere, are rarer than you may think. Islets is a special game. The second game from solo developer Kyle Thompson, Islets will surely scratch that itch.

Sometimes, a Metroidvania doesn't offer much new but it does everything so well that it's still a must-play so here's the excellent Islets.

Islets is a thoroughly charming and straightforward Metroidvania. Every moment provides a laid-back atmosphere through its humorous dialogue and adorable visual designs. These work in tandem while the tight controls and creative platforming make for a game that’s easy to put long play sessions into.

“We’ve got Hollow Knight at home” never sounded so appealing.

Islets serves up some of the tightest platforming seen in recent years but drops the ball when it comes to combat.
