Limbo is easily worth it’s price, there is nothing quite like it. Never has a game shown me so many emotions in such a small space of time. From fear, to anger, to laughter. It’s a brilliant experience from beginning to end. If you loved Braid, you will love this. If you didn’t? Still give this a try you might find a place in your heart for this, the Nighty Night of games.
Limbo is an incredible achievement. Very few games are as original, atmospheric, and consistently brilliant. It belongs in everybody's collection. The journey may be over too quickly, but you will be entertained every minute. This is one of my favorite games.
As to the downsides of Limbo? There aren’t that many. There isn’t much depth to the story and Playdead have clearly focused on the gameplay and creepy atmosphere of the game, so if you’re an RPG player that needs your fix for great storytelling, this game probably isn’t for you. Likewise, if you’re an FPS player that needs your octane thrills and explosive action to enjoy a game, Limbo is definitely not for you. If you’re interested in trying something a little different, or maybe taking your first foray into the mists of the indie genre, then this your game. Limbo isn’t particularly lengthy (...
An enchanting and minimal experience, Limbo is absolutely essential. Limbo's minimalism presents itself from the outset. The opening is bereft of button prompts and exposition, settling for a delightfully simplistic title screen and an opening in which our protagonist — a silhouette of a small boy with radiating white eyes — awakes from a slumber amid a grainy and macabre setting.
Limbo is a puzzle game that is littered with ideas and an artistic eye, but more importantly it understands the frustrations of repetition and makes failure enjoyable.
Rarely have I played a game (multiple times on various platforms, I might add) that so thoroughly nails the atmosphere. And that Playdead did this because they pursued visuals, audio, and gameplay simultaneously and not as silos speaks volumes that this game holds up so damn well after eight years. LIMBO is perhaps the greatest example of video games as an art form I have ever played.
Limbo is a fine example of how you can create a masterpiece, yet sell it through the Xbox Live arcade at a budget price. It may not be the longest game, but to capture the imagination of any player is something that is a rarity in gaming. If this is what black and white can do, then we can’t wait to see how colour revolutionizes our world.
