Jul 25, 2014 Read Review

Lovely Planet is one of the most hectic and weird looking FPS you will play this year. It is hard to achieve those two with the same game.

Aug 1, 2014 Read Review

Lovely Planet isn’t without its faults however and the main (and only) issue I have with this game is that certain levels can feel incredibly cheap and there’s a huge difficulty spike once you reach the fourth world. I’m mainly talking about the apple hazard and the enemies with homing bullets. The apples are launched into the air whenever you get to a certain spot and if they touch the ground you lose because reasons. The homing enemies are manageable but there are some levels where they’re infuriatingly annoying. Certain levels place these enemies in some really shitty spots that will have y...

Lovely Planet may look cutesy, but its streamlined shooting is built for dedicated speedrunners (you can even watch a speedrun of it via Games Done Quick). Players who live for training, repetition, memory and self-achievement will find a quite solid and refreshingly different-looking shooter here, even if it's not completely perfect. With no story or bonuses or really any other elements to speak of, however, the widespread appeal feels limited. Definitely try the demo first if you can.

It’s hard to hate and love a game at the same time. Lovely Planet teeters on the brink of being annoyingly repetitive, while joyfully addictive. This bizarre, glee-injected shooter will have you smiling from the initial blast of colour and upbeat tempo, but the novelty soon wears thin. Joy turns into frustration, and frustration turns into an inevitable rage quit. Prepare to play a game that’s easy to pick up but arduous to master.

To sum Lovely Planet up is difficult. It’s certainly an interesting experience, but I’m just not quite sure how much I enjoyed it. The cute Japanese-themed world is certainly a big departure from any other game out there on the Xbox One right now, and its originality is definitely a plus, but Lovely Planet is perhaps a little too abstract to stand out from the crowd. It’s clear that the developers were trying to do something very different with this game, but I’m not convinced they managed to pull it off.
