When the issues of a game are rolled and stomped by its greatness, then it’s something to invest on if you have some spare.
With a Zelda-like campaign and a deep spell building system, Mages of Mystralia aims to make its name in the action-adventure genre.
Mages of Mystralia is not without its shortcomings, but its gameplay is too fun not to recommend. Through the use of an insanely clever system of spell-crafting, there’s just the right amount of challenge in combat and puzzle-solving to be had. By pairing a lighthearted adventure with solid gameplay mechanics, there’s something here for everyone.
Mages of Mystralia is a cracking game. It successfully captures the feel of 16 bit adventures and combines them with a fantastic spellcrafting system and the sidequests and character development of modern action RPGs. It isn’t the longest game and some may find the price a little steep given how cheap so many PC games are, but it definitely deserves to do well and I would highly recommend picking ...
Plenty of games allow players to overcome their enemies by raining down fire from the sky or channeling lightning through their fingertips. Magic is a fun solution to many problems, but few games bother with the finer mechanics of how a magic spell works. Everything else is just fine. It’s a decent adventure with varied combat, cool boss battles, and semi-interesting locales. I’m going to keep at it until I’ve obtained everything there is to obtain, but even then I know I won’t have seen everything there is to see. Some of the neatest stuff possible isn’t scripted in by the designers, it’s waiting to be imagined and created by an aspiring magician.
Mages of Mystralia's spellcrafting system is a distinctive, signature mechanic. The appeal of the game lies in keeping things just interesting enough to compel the player forward in a colourful setting – finding new runes to unlock new spell possibilities, dropping new story beats to bread-crumb the fantasy plot along. Rewarding puzzles and memorable bosses round out an enjoyable adventure that, e...
“Charm and curiosity” were the two words on my mind when first seeing Mages of Mystralia’s trailer. These two words carried with me throughout my journey in the colourful world of Mystralia, and remain with me now at the end of my playthrough. Written by Ed Greenwood, creator of Dungeons & Dragons’ Forgotten Realms campaign, and developed by indie outfit Borealys Games, the game is a whimsical adv...
