Marvel vs. Capcom Origins Reviews

Professional reviews from gaming critics

Despite some odd menu design choices and a few online hiccups, MVC:O does a tremendous job of preserving the fun and challenging experiences that made both of these games special. It shines a light on a turning point within the history of the fighting genre and manages to let players have a great time with characters they love in the process. If you’re old enough to remember what an arcade smells like, or the original Onslaught comic story arc, or if you’re a newer fighting enthusiast eager to learn some of your roots, then MVC:O will not disappoint.

As a history lesson, Marvel vs. Capcom Origins is a great experience. Both Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes and Marvel Super Heroes hold up surprisingly well. The love put into the collection is clear in the attention to faithfully reproducing exactly what made players fall in love with these games in the first place. Neither title is perfect due to some blatantly unbalanced characters, but as a walk down memory lane, this package is hard to beat.

Throughout the 1990’s it sometimes felt like I spent half my time in the arcades, and after the success of Street Fighter II, there was a ton of fighters to play. New games were plenty with Capcom leading the charge. But what could make a 2D fighter more interesting?  How about a 2D fighter involving some of your favorite Superhero’s?  If that’s not enough, how about a having both Marvel and Capcom characters battling it out?  As a comic geek (you should see my old collection), this seemed like a match made in heaven.
