I figured I would delve right into how this new version of our great sport handles. Right off the hop I found that NHL 13 feels tighter and easier to control then previous releases in the series, and the older games control pretty well too. I really enjoyed my time with NHL 13. And if you’re a hockey junky like me, chances are you will, too. For a full-price title, gamers get so much more than mere roster and tuner updates (which come for free and with regularity, by the way). You also get robust online and offline modes that could potentially keep you busy for hundreds of hours. NHL 14 takes the ice in a new way, and it brings with it retro and new players alike with NHL 94 Mode. Even if the menus are slow and the AI is stupid, 14 is still a strong outing that any hardcore fan, as well as the retro and new, will gladly pick up and play.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the NHL series is the undisputed king of the ice, and has been for some time. Consequently, the competition has pretty much given up, leaving EA Sports lording it over its virtual representation of ice hockey, like Madden NFL is top of the food chain where American Football games are concerned.
