It's possible that Nintendo will improve Nintendo Switch Sports with future updates, but that remains to be seen. It's known that Nintendo Switch Sports is adding golf in a future update, but otherwise Nintendo's post-launch plans for the game remain a mystery. There's a lot of work to be done to make Nintendo Switch Sports even half as fun as its predecessors, and as it stands now, it's a game that Switch owners can safely skip.

Wii Sports was amazingly popular and served as the perfect pack-in game for the Wii. Anyone who booted up the game could immediately see that the Wii’s motion controls weren’t just a gimmick and that the Wiimote set this console apart from any other that had come before it. As such, players have fond memories of that game and its sequel that introduced the Wii MotionPlus, Wii Sports Resort. So, many fans assumed that Nintendo Switch Sports would engender the same feelings. Unfortunately, it ended up feeling more like Wii Sports Club did for the Wii U.

Nintendo Switch Sports has moments of fun, but they’re buried under forced, inaccurate motion controls and lacking minigames. Only 2 and a half of the six sports on offer here are really fun or engaging, character customization is shockingly sparse, and the novelty wears off in minutes. This feels more like a cheap imitation of Wii Sports, which was free, than anything close to worth the price of entry.

Frustrations aside, there’s plenty of fun to be had in Nintendo Switch Sports, no matter how you choose to play. It’s a valiant nod back to Wii Sports, slightly more grown-up and refined this time around. Perhaps it’s not quite as fun – though maybe that’s just because we’re older and more world-weary than we were back in 2006 – but it’ll undoubtedly still be a game to pull out at any family gathering. It’s just a shame that earning new cosmetic items is locked to online play.

Nintendo Switch Sports is a great way to satisfy any urge to play motion control games. Unfortunately, it doesn't make any effort at being more than that.

Nintendo Switch Sports is a fun reminder of the Wii Sports craze, bringing back some classic sports and adding some new ones that make use of the Joy-Con and motion controls in more advanced ways. It's all just a bit shallow, though, and difficult to wholeheartedly recommend unless you expect to play online a lot or constantly break it out for local head-to-head battles.

Wii Sports and its Resort follow-up were watershed moments for motion-control entertainment. Sports simulators usually underscore realism. And yet Nintendo’s family-centric approach to the genre imbued a selection of competitive activities with accessible interactions, lighthearted art direction, and catchy jingles. Switch Sports attempts to replicate that magic for a contemporary audience with sleek visuals, minigames that feel distinctive but familiar, and avatar customization coupled with ranked multiplayer. Switch Sports is a slam dunk choice for gatherings, but a lack of mechanical depth and repetitive content make the hand-swinging, leg-kicking thrills lamentably short-lived.

Back in 2006, Wii Sports had us flailing our arms at the TV screen alongside our family members. Nintendo Switch Sports now hopes to introduce new families to the sport of arm-flailing.

Wii Sports occupies a strange space in video game history. Nintendo’s motion-controlled minigame collection is probably their most successful product ever, and yet, who talks about the game today? Wii Sports sold 10s of millions of Wiis more-or-less singlehandedly, influenced Nintendo’s entire output for a generation, and then… we collectively erased its existence from our minds. Of course, everything old is new again eventually, so could the gaming public be ready for another round? Nintendo Switch Sports aims to answer that question when it launches later this week, but does it measure up to past entries in the series? Tighten...

Wii Sports, despite being simple in premise and not really a hot contender in discussions of the best games for the Wii, was nevertheless the greatest selling game on the console ever. It has sold over 82 million copies worldwide, more than double the number of the runner-up, Mario Kart Wii. It proved there was an enormous market for casual experiences that were easily shared with friends, family, and acquaintances alike. The new Nintendo Switch Sports seems to want to capitalise on that lega...

It may not exactly be reinventing the wheel, but Nintendo Switch Sports is exactly what I wanted from the Wii Sports' successor.

A muddled reimagining of the groundbreaking Wii Sports, with an unwarranted focus on online play and new game additions that are never as much fun as the originals.

As an offline package, Nintendo Switch Sports is a hoot just for Bowling and Chambara alone. The other games are worth trying at least once. Volleyball might even grow on some people. Unfortunately, Badminton, Tennis, and Soccer lost steam with me after a while, but half a package that I'll return to again and again is certainly nothing to sneeze at. I hope this is a collection that will continue to grow, because I had forgotten what a crowd-pleaser the Wii Sports era was. It's good to have that spirit back.

If all you want is more of what came before, it's here (mostly). Grab it to fill the party game shelf but don't expect it to hold your attention outside of gatherings unless you're feeling really competitive about the online stuff.

Nintendo Switch Sports is Wii Sports in all but name, a revamp of the popular motion control sporting title on a brand new (yet slightly aging but potentially OLED-enhanced) console.

Nintendo Switch Sports attempts to capture the magic of the first two games in the series. Its efforts in doing so are not bad per se, but they are extremely basic and do not build upon the previous concepts in any revolutionary way.
